511735.MAINSP1op.msp Not Found

An odd problem with a difficult to find solution. First a quick description of the problem, and the fix I found for it, and then I'll go into "how I got into this mess". Hopefully this will help someone down the road...

PROBLEM: You open a Microsoft Office application like Excel, Word or Outlook and are presented with a message that a feature doesn't exist and when you try to go much further with things you get a message that says something like "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". It's looking for C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11\Cabs\511735 with installation package 511735.MAINSP1op.msp

You look on all all of your machines (if you have others) and can't find any such folder or file. You cannot update or repair Office and you cannot even uninstall it - getting the same error message!!

The Fix - Get the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from »support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;290301 Install that on the computer then run it and identify MS Office 2003 as the program to remove the installation information about. You will then have to reinstall MS Office - the good news is that you won't have to reactivate; at least I didn't.

How I (and others) got into this fix This seems to often occur when you do a move from an old/small drive to a newer/larger drive using tools like MaxBlast (Maxtor drives) or Western Digital's DataLife tools. At least that's how I seem to have gotten into the mess, and I found reference to at least one other case of this happening to someone who made such a move. Specifically I installed a new WD 320GB HD to use as C: and used the WD DataLife tool to 'mirror' the contents of the old drive to the new.

It appears that somehow the installation information database either gets corrupted or is possibly (I emphasize possibly) intentionally corrupted thinking that the Office apps are being installed on another machine and thus violating the EULA. I'm not sure what the true cause is. But the result is that you are very much hung up with a crippled Office installation that you can't fix and you can't even uninstall so as to start over.

Using the Installation Cleanup utility effectively removes all installation information about the program and kind of makes the system forget it ever existed. At this point you have to reinstall the offending package - preferably to the same location as the original and using the same software KEY.

This worked as a fix for me. After my searching around for a fix, and seeing how many references to this problem there are - many apparently lost souls still looking for a fix, I thought I'd make a post that someone might stumble across later that actually has some hope of fixing the problem.

It should be noted that I looked on 3 other machines and did NOT find the path or the file referenced in the error message! And after reinstalling MS Office 2003 Pro neither the path nor the file exists on the repaired system.

I had the exact same problem and the windows installer cleanup utility worked for me with a minimum of fuss. I had used maxblast to copy my hard drive from a failing 60gb drive to a 120gb drive and the problem with office 2003 started right after that. Thanks for the post, these forums are a valuable resource.:)

Is you download Office2003SP1-kb842532-client-enu.exe
from microsoft.com and then use winzip open the file and you should see MAINSP1op.msp extract this file to a folder (c:\temp) and rename it to 511735.MAINSP1op.msp or leave it as is and then uninstall office pointing to this file when asked for and reinstall office.

It's a Dell!

You seem to have had some experience with this issue elsewhere? Dell help desk? Any more insight as to why it happens at all? Odd that it seems to happen during transition to a replacement drive so often.
