| setting up a steam account
i just bought Half Life 2, and i want to play it. How the heck do I play??? This green Steam box shows up and there's buttons to click, but everything is blank - there's no type to tell me what to do! This is the 1st time I've even heard of Steam, and I see someone earlier wrote it may take them 2 weeks to respond to my email asking how to set up the damn thing! So I might have to wait 2 weeks to play a game I bought last night?! RIDICULOUS!!!
I just got done totally uninstalling Steam and Half Life 2, then reinstalling them with all my virus, etc software disabled. Guess what? STILL THE SAME PROBLEM!! This is really BS! I just want to play this freaking game and they all made it this difficult just to start the damn thing!?
HERE'S THE PROBLEM: When I try to start the freakin game I get a greenish box, that I assume is the login box, that says Steam at the top with the logo and Valve in the lower left corner. In the middle is 2 buttons I can push, but no writing at all telling me what these buttons are. When I push the buttons I get more screens with buttons I can push, and areas it looks like I could type in - but again no writing at all!
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!
I've been dying to play this game and now this stupid Steam thing won't let me! |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom Hi, thanks for responding!
I don't have a steam icon in my system tray. Steam put a shortcut on my desktop and I can find it in my programs list, but if I right click either of these I don't get 'settings'. The only similar thing I get is 'properties'. Any idea what's going on? |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom How about trying the steam installer. Once installed you should be able to create an account, input your cd key and be good to go. »www.steampowered.com/index.php?a···steamnow |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom tYeah, I've tried the steam installer like infinity times (Napolean Dynamite). I wasn't sure which connection speed was mine, so I tried it each time with a different speed check-boxed. That didn't help. Oh, and when I loaded Half Life 2 onto my computer I loaded all 5 cds as prompted yet I was never prompted to enter the CD key, same for Steam - never prompted me for a CD key. And I've installed and uninstalled the whoile game 2x! The only strange thing - which was not that strange - was halfway through the installation I got a message saying I had a version of Direct x 9.0 or higher already on my system and that the installation would not try to update it because I already had it. At the bottom of this text box it said something like I could hit the back button to change any information I'd inputted - BUT LIKE I SAID I NEVER GET ASKED TO INPUT ANY INFORMATION! |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom No, I don't have a steam acct. Like I said I'd never even heard of it until last night when I bought HL2 @ walmart, brought it home, and tried to install it. With the cd installation it automatically does a steam installation but like I said when the Steam box comes on the screen, there's no type whatsoever except the steam and valve logos. And when I hit the buttons I get more steam pages that are like blank forms, with no writing whatsoever. |

TechnoScott Premium join:2003-03-25 00000 | reply to teatab7hotmailcom I would uninstall steam and HL2... then remove all the valve stuff from the registry. Then, install the steam installer from steampowered.com.... once you have an account built, register a product you already own... you should be fine. |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom I dont think hes stupid like everyone thinks. He just has no writing on or by the buttons. That doesnt make him stupid.
teatab7hotmailcom, If i had any idea why theres no writing id help you out , but i have no idea. The best thing you can do (as mentioned above) is to remove all things related to steam , then try to install. Steam can be very confusing. Yes Steam installs automatically. Make sure your connected to the internet when you install. When and if you are able to create an account , you will then need your cd key. Everyone in the forum gets mad when i talk about how steam sucks. But its not user friendly at all.(Except of course for those who are gifted/lucky enough to catch on right away) Ive been working with steam alot more lately and like everything else , you get used to it. Good luck. |

| reply to teatab7hotmailcom Okay I just tried to install Steam again. SAME PROBLEM. When it's done installing I get the program box on the screen (greyish/greenish) and no writing at all, just the Steam and Valve logos - and 2 buttons I can push, but no labeling for them. After I push the buttons I go to more greyish/greenish pages with buttons and windows that have no labeling. NO TYPE AT ALL. It's all missing, so I don't know what to do. |

| Thank you so much, those of you who tried to help. I finally figured it out...I didn't have the fonts installed that Steam uses for it's login pages. As soon as I installed the fonts all the words appeared! Setting up the account was easy from there! Thanks again - and good gaming! |

Anyways, have fun gaming! HL2 is surely fun. BTW, you would also get CS:S and HL2: LC & DM. So have fun playing the games you get with it, too. -- It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up again |

Now you offer no help so take a hike. Now go sell crazy somewhere else. Time to hit the Ignore button on you goodbye.
I love your informative posts lol.
