That's the difference between audio and video. Even in the past 4 years that I have had XM, the signal reception improves with each new generation of hardware. My SkyFi2 gets a signal in places my old Sony PNP and even SkyFi1 never could get. I now only leave the antenna on the dashboard of my work vehicle, not the roof (where it gets torn off).
Too bad this app isn't an improvement for the crappy Macintosh XM Radio Online interface. I really hate having to open WMP to listen to the online channels. But AOL did one thing right for XMOL, Hawaiian music!

xm's signal is indeed much different than directv's, i have seen directv cut of from heavy rain/clouds, unlike xm

Actually, my original reply was in regards XM via AOL versus XM via DirecTV. Whereas I have never used XM nor Sirius via satelite, I am not aware of any difficulties recieving either service on overcast days. However, I do have DirecTV and the bad-weather-outages can be a real nuisance here in New York City with a standard DirecTV dish. |

Well since you brought it up, I'll jump, but I address this in a more general fashion as well.
You can receive these streams from AOL.com I believe if you have a supported browser and OS (FF is acceptable, but OS X apparently isn't..go figure). Is there any easy way to do this either without an AOL account, or using a program that could simply connect to the stream?
For example, using the Triton Beta in WinXP, the streams are opened in an IE window. In theory, should I not be able to trick this into thinking that I'm on XP and IE5 regardless of the browser (spoofing the info sent to the server)?
For the local radio stations in town, I have their stream bookmarked so I can hit their stream whenever I want (It's delivered via embedded Windows MP) in FF. It would be cool if I could simply pull this off with my browser on any machine I use, as opposed to the app in OS X, and Triton in XP.

I know this is OT, but I'm curious about those who have a hard time receiving XM's Sat signals vs. their terrestrial repeater network. Down here in Florida, I actually have my home unit's antennae facing NE (not S like they recommend) and it actually has to penetrate a dense tree canopy as the two trees outside this window have things pretty well covered. I still get 3 bars on the Sat signal and no bars on the repeater end as indicated in antennae settings on the receiver.
I guess what I'm trying to get at here is whether the XM sats are similar to the GPS sats when it comes to their coverage because I know there is a greater GPS density in the South then there is in the North. |

threading issues... he's referring to getting XM on DTV satellite, which does not feed off the ground repeater network and is susceptible to poor weather.
BTW, XM in the car fades to black under 50ft-long bridges for a few seconds. There's your 'cloudy day'. |

You know, this is one of those rare times where AOL actually gets it right. This is a good idea and works fabulously.
As a 3 1/2 year XM subscriber, I'm also glad that XM is finding ways to branch out in order to survive. I've also got D*, so next week I'll also have XM streams via their satellites.

You should be able to hear it anyway with an XM receiver as the signal is broadcast by the three satellites and a multi-thousand ground repeater network. Clouds don't affect the satellite signal.

Use AOL Radio combined with AirFoil to stream it to Aiport Express. You can even click on a song or artist in the now playing box and be taken to that selection in the iTunes store. |
