Re: A warning for those switching to Primus

I just got off the phone with AOL. As much as I dislike AOL, I was on the phone asking all sorts of questions about their service. The reps said there are no restrictions on upload OR download bandwidth, and that the connection will be a 3/0.8 connection in this area. Well, I've tried everyone else... I think when Primus boots me off I'll get them to release the port and try AOL. I just hope that it is actually available here (their computer was being flaky.)
Precisely my reason for not going with them. They can't even figure it out that DSL in western canada is not 3000/800, but 1500/512 or 2500/640. Maybe they're wrong on the caps as well.

So has anyone tried AOL in BC?

No, they are not wrong. They are making the assumption that everyone in BC uses 3GB per month reading email (yeah right) or _should_ only use that much. Being as generous as they are, hey give you 50GBs since they assume most people won't go over, which is true. There are those that pay thousands for a computer to check email only and there are those who will use it as an entertainment system. It's just that ISP's left out the latter.

SON OF A B!TCH! I'm getting disconnected no matter what! This is total bull! I was told,
"It's true that it's unlimited but there's a fine print and that lets us cancel your account."

Tumble: it could be AOL offers 2.5/512 (=3) or some other weird combination. My upload on Primus wasn't as fast as on Telus, just a thought.

And even 1.5 unlimited is better than 7mbit/50GB. I'd rather have the slower speed and use it as much as I want. Primus kept saying it was 3mbit too, don't you remember (Primus doesn't offer anything above 1.5, of course.)

Anyway, it's very apparent that Primus wants all the grannies to sign up to use their email as does Telus. Bleh.

I'm going to find my Shaw modem right now... and phone them for an install.

Finally some good news.

I called up Shaw to get internet for the time being until I sort out the DSL port crap and they'll be here at 8am Monday... how lucky, I won't even be without internet for a day.

Staying under 50GB is gonna be hard... I'll still have to research AOL before I make a decision on going back to DSL. After I get a taste of 7mbit, I dunno if I'll want to go back to their 3mbit (which is probably 1.5 like Primus.)

Let me translate that for you.

Abuse
Def #1: Any usage that points out our inability to manage our network.
Def #2: Anything that is a good value for you, as a customer.
Def #3: Anytime that we have to actually provide a service, in exchange for moneys paid.

Errr... one bad thing about AOL I can think of right now is that they don't provide a news service so one would have to buy a 3rd party news service.

Not sure about AOL's speed... the AOL site says nothing more than B.S.

Not only does AOLs site contain nothing more than BS, they don't even publish their fucking ToS! I've spent the last 15 minutes looking, searching, even fucking CALLING (their office is closed for the holidays) and I can't find their ToS *anywhere*. It appears to be available at "AOL Keyword" "Broadband TOS". Which appears to only be accessible on the fuckin' service! I truly despise AOL's "Walled Garden" business model. On the plus side, their watered-down "Price Plans" page does describe the ADSL service as "Always on, unlimited high-speed access". But then, so does Primus'.

I never, ever thought I would even be contemplating becoming an AOL customer. Shame on your for driving me this far, Primus, TELUS and Shaw. When your prospective customers (And your current happily paying customers!!) are looking to AOL for relief from your business practises and service stagnation, you know something's wrong.

Don't let Primus get away with this! The more emails he gets, the faster it'll be headlined!

Just out of curiousity. Those getting phone calls from Telus about 30 days suspensions and Primus disconnections, where are you guys located at? Are most of these problems occuring in the Vancouver and surrounding areas? Has anyone outside of BC been suspended by Telus or disconnected by Primus.

I'm in Alberta and I haven't got any notices seen the first ones months ago for going over 100 Gigs. I still download around that much and haven't got suspended or threatened to.

Comcast has an invisible cap. They won't tell you what it is, but they will drop you if you cross it. It comes back to Definition #1. If you live in an area where the network is in good shape, as I do. They won't bother you. But if you live in an area where their network is a POS. Rather than improving the network. They relieve the load burden, by dropping people for "abuse."

Whoo-hoo! Noone will be getting disconnected! Execs have decided to kill the entire "termination" idea. Cindy, network security, has informed me that there will be another email going out this weekend stating the new changes which includes new data limit, bandwidth monitoring tools, and also implementations of warning. WHOO!

Good job, Primus! Way to listen to your client base and react quickly.

I just told you that Cindy, network security, told me that. The CSR (customer service reprentative) fired her an email asking her to contact me to update me on the situation. Unfortunately, she's no longer in the office because of the short holiday hours. If you've been following the primus threads, you'll know who Cindy is. She told me she doesn't know what the new limit is but all will be explained by the email being sent out this weekend. She was really nice and helpful. Primus has definitely got my business.
