I did that with my Earthlink email address after it
started collecting spam around a year or so ago. I
changed it to something not easily discoverable through
dictionary attacks, and then only gave it out to those
I absolutely trusted not to spam me.

When I signed up for ComcastHSI, I used the same name
there as well. Since I'm still using my old Earthlink
email address, I haven't given out the Comcast one to
anybody yet.

Neither address will never be used on Usenet. That is
the single biggest source of harvestable addresses for
spammers, and even munging your address on there isn't
foolproof.

I've had comcast.net email accounts for over a year now and never receive spam through any of them. Of course, I chose email names that would be difficult to guess and now guard them jealously.
