1) If your cable modem is connected directly to your computer: You can simply enable/disable the network card you have the modem connected to. You can select the icon to appear in the task tray so you can enable/disable from the task tray. This will sever your connection to the internet.
2) If you use a router, it really depends on the router. Many routers have the ability to disable/enable the WAN port from the router web setup screen. This can be a little cumbersome and time consuming sometimes though so you may want to settle for option 3:
3) Buy a power strip with a switch on it ($10?) and use it exclusively for the equipment you want turned off. You can plug both your router and cable modem in it, or just the cable modem if you want to use the router's LAN functionality still to connect to other computers in the house. Now you just have to push the power button to disable/enable the Internet. There are also wall mountable powerstrips available and wall mountable power switches for easy access from your desk chair. Either way, you should be done for less then $20 and cleaning up the wires under your desk.  -- And i'm right. I'm always right, but this time I'm a little more right then I usually am. |
