I am an Operations admin (1 in a crew of 6) working for one of the largest eldercare companies in North America. I help support over 150 stand-alone and rack mount servers, plus 8 racks of HP BL series blade servers. Mainly a Windows shop, with some Linux, HP-UX scattered in. Also support several AS/400 systems. We support over 250 nursing facilities all connected back to our datacenter via partial or full T1s. All workstations at facilities and most at corporate access computing resources via Citrix. Also perform printer setups, file backup and restores, tape rotations, cabling, server installs....just whatever needs to be done..... |

I'm a Sr. UNIX System Admin for a specialized group of research scientists at Harvard Medical School. Our group also supports research at a number of other affiliated universities around the country. The research is performed on UNIX platforms, and I mostly support Linux, OS X and IRIX. Most of my time is spent managing about 50 high-end workstations, three local clusters, a few dozen servers and a multi-terabyte backup server.
I'm a proponent of open source technologies and have successfully replaced several proprietary systems in our network with open source (or at least open standard) solutions.

| reply to dbmaven Wow, a lot has changed in 10 months. I'm in class now (As in right this minute) for my MCSA / MCSE certification. They want me to take over some day. I'll have to sign a paper saying I won't quit for an as yet undetermined amount of time, but that just means job security for me. I'm having lots of fun now, and they're starting to recognize that I really do know what I'm talking about when I'm in the IT mode. -- "Why are there 6 pedals if there are only 4 directions?" |

| reply to dbmaven I'm a bit late here, but here goes -
I'm a retired IBM senior SE and marketing specialist, systems planning specialist for a fortune 100 Pharmaceutical distribution services company and IT manager for a medium sized retail chain.
Now I'm a freelancer who works part time to keep active in a career I love with great people I like and respect - not to getting a few bucks for travel, toys and good scotch.
My present roles are to consult, assist and support a select group of great customers in planning, implementing and maintaining their IS implementations. I also do a bit of volunteer (and occasional paid) grunt work to assist private and public sector entities in infrastructure protection and response to threats.
I also lurk and post regularly in the security, digital imaging, weather, NYC, UK, Southeast and midwest forums.
For those considering a consulting career, I highly recommend Steve 's excellent article, So You Want to be a Consultant?.

| reply to dbmaven While I'm no longer in the sysadmin role, I've held many. Help desk, desktop support, network administration, network performance management and planning, System V, Solaris and FreeBSD administration.
Now I'm a project manager with an outsourcing company and while the change from "doer" to "manager" is challenging, I really enjoy the work. -- Some assembly required, your mileage may vary, no pixels were harmed in the writing of this post. | reply to dbmaven I am a system admin/it tech for the advertising sales department of a major company.
My actual title is site support manager. My direct supervisor is about 125 miles away.
I have 2 contractors that work for me, a cable tech, and a desktop support tech.
I support about 60 users, 20 sales reps, the rest are a director and a VP, then the others are in production.
I handle everything, desktop support, printers, a few servers, phones, and a few other toys. Because my site has the production department, I get to play with cool toys like AVID, media sphere, seachange (which is my major duty as I have to cover about 12 sites)
I have a great stable situation here, but there is not much challange or chance for advancement unless I want to relocate.
I have been here about 4 years now. I also do some consulting on the side, and have a few regular clients.
Plusses of my job, I can pretty much set my own schedule. I have an actuall office (with a door!!!) in a very very private part of the building. I have a company car. There are some days I don't even need to go into the office.
My two contractors usually handling the small fires that happen on the day to day, and I do the budgeting, installing new equipment, and take care of the phones and servers. I did have a 3rd shift backup tape operator but that position is no longer.
I love my job, but I am always looking for the "next thing" -- What it boils down to is a few Multi-Billionairs arguing with a few Multi-Millionairs for who can be the top dung on a big steam'n pile of crap. |

| reply to dbmaven Holy wow! Look at all the replies. I figured this was a new board... that or I've been posting Exch/GPO questions in the wrong forum
I work in the higher ed., and my shop supports an academic unit of approximately 1000 users in a mostly MS environment (AD/Exch 2003). I've been there for ~3.5 years now, and my job responsibilities include Group Policies (my how we've learned), application deployment, app servers, and labs. At this point, I do very little direct user support, and with our new hire, I hope to focus my energy on GP/app deployment, and I'm looking forward to our SMS installation within the next month or so (I have my fingers crossed). I usually dabble in whater the boss is up to as well, so my role roams across the board...
In my prior life I worked for EDS supporting GM and then the State of Michigan, with very little college education. I'm currently in Calc II and Physics I (in my free time, right?) while pursuing my BS in CS. -- "Pressure makes diamonds." --General George S. Patton |

| reply to dbmaven Well, since I've been lurking around here I thought I would post.
I've been in the IT business for about 10 years now. I've worked majorly contracts up until the last 4 years and I still do contract work on the side. I started out just doing large installs of workstations and servers then moved into support. I'm primarily a MS, Avaya and Cisco guy.
My current assignment (because I chose to accept it ) is a permanent position, Manager of Infrastructure and Development. This company has about 5000+ people, 200+ sites and they are spread all over the world. I'm told that my job roll will include developing new networks, and redesigning old networks to conform to company standards. Honestly it's a dream job for me because of hours and salary.
I also currently have support contracts for very small companies (7 people or less) and help them move forward with technology. It seems that I have a niche in the IT field with my experience in Microsoft Small Business Server (2000 & 2003)
My education consists of my 10 years in the field, vendor classes, some trade school. I have yet to achieve any certifications though I've finished all the courses for MCSA, Security+, Net+ & A+.
Because I get spread pretty thin, I tend to just read, and I don't post that often. -- "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke |

| reply to dbmaven I just found this forum. I'm a Systems Engineer for a large retail company in Illinois. I've been with them since '87, except for a layoff - now I'm back. I'm a programmer in various languages and am learning a few more now on the PC. Started out working on the mainframe, but now I'm learning JAVA, ASP, etc.
Man, is this a blast! I wouldn't trade my job with anyone! I just love working with computers.

| reply to dbmaven I work in downtown Chicago for a golf software company. My official title is Level 1 support, and the pay just barely reflects it. It's my first IT job with a business with more than 15 employees. I like the company, and there is room to grow.
We provide a POS system and reservation software for a lot of courses all across the country. Although I don't have any official certs (I could easily load up on the basics), I feel a little over-qualified sometimes. The work is challenging sometimes, which I love. Only major complaints I have are a few select incompetent co-workers, who spread their work onto us. I've learned a lot more as far as the server end goes, I've been to our colo facility and worked on our 4 cages, and helped alot of people in the office. I've also done some phone system setup. I'm up for my first 6 month review, and salary is my number one concern.
I'll be taking some cert tests soon for backup, sometimes I feel like I'm spinning my wheels here when I could be doing alot more work for a lot more pay. |
