Re: [TWC] How to disconnect?

1) If your cable modem is connected directly to your computer: You can simply enable/disable the network card you have the modem connected to. You can select the icon to appear in the task tray so you can enable/disable from the task tray. This will sever your connection to the internet.

2) If you use a router, it really depends on the router. Many routers have the ability to disable/enable the WAN port from the router web setup screen. This can be a little cumbersome and time consuming sometimes though so you may want to settle for option 3:

3) Buy a power strip with a switch on it ($10?) and use it exclusively for the equipment you want turned off. You can plug both your router and cable modem in it, or just the cable modem if you want to use the router's LAN functionality still to connect to other computers in the house. Now you just have to push the power button to disable/enable the Internet. There are also wall mountable powerstrips available and wall mountable power switches for easy access from your desk chair. Either way, you should be done for less then $20 and cleaning up the wires under your desk.

And i'm right. I'm always right, but this time I'm a little more right then I usually am.

Why not just unplug your ethernet cable from either the router or if you have no router then the modem? Seems to me this absolutely/positively severs your internet connection.

I don't do anything special at night other than turn off power to my computer. Since I have VoIP 800 service, I don't want to shut down my toll-free line, so I leave my modem, router and terminal adapter powered up.

Do any of you disconnect from the internet connection when you do other activities on the computer so that your connection isn't constantly on?

I miss not being able to do that. There are times when I want to be on the computer and not the internet. But, I would rather not have an active connection while I'm doing other activities on the computer.
I seem to recall that some software firewalls (such as Zone Alarm) had an option where you could click on them in the system tray and temporarily halt all network traffic.

I just put the modem in standby, and I put the computer in standby at night. When I'm working on the computer, I just leave it on.

If you have a standby button, that severs connections with the modem and the CMTS and by turning that on will suspend your internet access.

Also you can just disable the network card if you want to sever connection with the internet, or the whole network.

Theres two easy ways.

Also, do any of you do anything special when you shut down your PC for the night? Do you turn the modem off or do you put your firewall in lockdown?
