Hey, I'm in Davis, CA and I need help figuring out why I'm getting speeds so low. It's been slow ever since I got it a few weeks ago, and now it's at the point where I can barely get work done because the net is so slow. I use an DCM245 RCA modem coupled with a Linksys WRT54G. I noticed that my signal/power levels are well out of the optimal range as prescribed by this link: »/faq/7124.

1 edit | ya it sure does look like you have a signal problem so you might want to try and eliminate spliters or check all your cable connections. If that doesnt work it might be time to request a truck roll from comcast. I can tell you that Power Level 55.0 dBmV of is definately high. I had mine get up to 53 on upstream side then my sb5100 modem could no longer connect. We had to have a tech come out and replace some spliters and conections from the street on in to fix the problem. |

1 edit | reply to lordz Well I removed the only splitter the modem was connected to and I got these results. The numbers are now more respectable. However, the results on the speedtests prove to be no different! The upload is always consistent and reaches the maximum advertised thoroughput. I also have to add that my downstream reaches near 2 mbit if I use a download manager to multi-thread my downloads. Single threaded tasks like web surfing only exhibit normal speeds
Forward Path: Signal Acquired at 555.013 MHz SNR: 34.6 dB Received Signal Strength: -13.2 dBmV Micro-Reflections: 24 dBc Modulation: 256 QAM Return Path:

Speedtest:
2005-10-17 03:00:58 EST: 88 / 310 Your download speed : 90190 bps, or 88 kbps. A 11 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked? Your upload speed : 317704 bps, or 310 kbps.
Comcast has given me the runaround many times...missed appointment dates and a million transfers on the phone... a truck roll is the last thing I want to do! |

| I have Comcast in Davis and have noticed that I have been having trouble since apartment turn over ended. I have had two Comcast techs out, a line tech, and have spoken with an engineer. I guess south Davis is a little overloaded with all the apartment complexes that it has. I just talked to the engineer last night; Comcast gave me a pager number to dial when my pings get over 100ms, and he had talked to one of the "network" guys as he called it. The network guy told the engineer not to bother coming out to my apartment because they are aware of the issues that we have been having. From my research on the Comcast network in Davis I have found out that last October they split the nodes up. Previously they only had one, they split that to three and I am assuming that they will be splitting them up again. I asked the engineer if he had an ETA on the fix, and he didnt have the slightest clue. But he said he would give me a call when he found out more information. |

| BTW, I called today to see if I could have someone tell me if/when the problem would be fixed. No answer to that but, I told them that I am not going to pay for the service and the put in a request for reimbursement. I recommend everyone in Davis that is having this problem do the same. Money talks.... |

| reply to lordz What part of Davis do you live in? I live on Drew Cir, which is right off of Cowell BLVD. I found out today that it is our node being overloaded. We have over 300 HSI subscribers on our node (DA21D). They are planing to split it. The tech that I talked to today told me to give it until next Friday. I told him that I could not have the latency due to work. So if it is not fixed by Friday I suppose I will be going with DSL Extreme. |

| reply to lordz Yea, I live in Sharps and Flats. Mainly use my connection for business. I managed to get the tech that came out the other day to give me a second month free. Keep telling them you wont pay till it is fixed. I recommend that everyone that is having an issue call them. Tell them that you are having trouble with your HSI service and you want a free month. Same thing next month. So on and so forth. |

| reply to lordz I got hooked up two weeks ago at my new apartment. My connection was chugging along at the advertised rate until this afternoon when it suddenly dropped to dial-up speeds. I hope this won't be chronic like everyone else is indicating. I live on Guava Lane.
As a side note, it took them nearly a month to get a tech out to hook me up. Are they short on manpower or something? |

| reply to lordz I live with 4 others in Davis, CA on the 6 mbps down / 768 kbps upload service and I have always been able to upload at near 768k speeds. But the download has been down to 150 - 300 kbps recently. This is after I unplugged everyone and just had one computer hooked up to the modem. Last night someone was downloading some Anime averaging 100 kilobytes per second and I ran a dslreports test from Megapath in SF, CA. It was downloading at 2.5 megabits down while that housemate was downloading the Anime. I think either Comcast fixed the slowdown or everyone in town went home for the weekend. We'll see. |

| I get just a little over 4 Mbps if I use a download manager. That's more than sufficient for me....around 540 KBps. Lots of people went home for the weekend so it's still too early to tell . |

I just got off the phone with comcast. I got a hold of one of their engineers and he told me that they "plan" on splitting our node DA21D next week. Now that is not for sure. But it is most likely going to happen. |

So you don't hold your breath on that information alone.
The plant operations people don't speak to customers. |
