 Antennas and dBi

Hello WISPs!

I'm not a WISP yet, but I would like to understand something...

I've searched, searched, and searched and I had got headaches. So, I decided to post here. If I'm at the wrong place, please let me know.

I would like to know how you calculate the dBi in an antenna. Is there some formula to this?

Thanks!

Best Regards,
Jason

Calculating the physical dBi in an antenna is actually very involved and difficult.

All manufacturers should give you the gain in dBi with their specs on the antenna.

Ah. Well, for example, a home made antenna. Like a cAntenna, or something.

Any ideas?

Best Regards,
Jason

If your going to be using homemade antennas for a WISP, your probably not going to get far.

Yes, I understand. This wouldn't be for a WISP. But, just in general.

If it's off topic, please direct me to the right place. I'm sorry.

Best Regards,
Jason

Manufacturer's typically use "antenna ranges" which are facilities set up for testing antennas of a variety of types.

For example:

Simply put, the antenna under test is measured against a reference antenna, and that antenna parameters are determined from that.

Using your Cantenna for an example, they put that on a rotating platform at a distance and apply a constant signal to the reference antenna. Then they rotate the platform slowly and record what the received signal levels are at your Cantenna. This yields the antenna plots that are usually available for every manufacturer's antennas. See some here (at the bottom of the page):

That is basically how it is done...

Thanks John! That helps a lot.

I thought that might be it, but it wasn't clear when searching for it.

Jason
