Their target is stable HDTV on demand, which requires
about 12 Meg service. Their target is also alot nearer
than 50 years... DS1/DS3/OC3 distribution is being phased
out and replaced by OC192/gigabit ethernet to bring the higher speeds closer to the end user- which makes the last mile less of a performace consideration.

12 meg per set maybe. No way your going to get a decent HD signal to 3-4 HD sets in a home on 12 meg and therin lies the problem with Bellsouth's plan.

From what I've seen discussed. The 2007 rollout will allow for up to 24mbs of service. Where can you fit multiple HD service and a data offering that will compete with cable offerings. Of course that's without massive HD compression which is just sinful.

It's been pointed out to me that Bellsouth doesn't compete with Verizon because their in different markets. Well, as a consumer, it doesn't do much for Bellsouth's 'high quality image' (some posters here who work for Bellsouth have this misguided feeling that Bellsouth has this image that's better than Comcast's or other companies) to know that my local phone company stinks compared to other area's local service. Especially if I'm forced into using their service even though in comparison I'm getting far less for my dollar that other areas because they are the only game in town.

No fifty years is pretty much dead on. It's taken them a decade to roll out DSL to the point they have it now. And they still have areas without DSL availability and spotty coverage in those areas that do.

"Sir SIR! We don't use DHCP servers. We only use IBM & Microsoft servers." From there my call to tech support went steadily downhill.

If this goes well, sbc will probably make a comeback in 2007 that is if they are bothered by users switching to bs.
