| reply to xmpierce This topic is a perfect example of why BellSouth will not give any dates until they're ready for the release.
They never said anything about October 8th. That came from a poster who "claimed" to have inside information from some unknown source- and could never be verified.
All BellSouth has ever said in their press releases was "4th Quarter"; which according to my calender ends on 12/31.
So here we go again; on October 9th we'll have all the posts about BellSouth "missing" the October 8th date- which never really existed in the first place.
I hope it gets here today, but I'll wait until I see it- whenever that is. -- Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday--so why bother? |

| reply to xmpierce I was in a Major Clients Association meeting yesterday where the Senior Director of Broadband Services for BSFA was speaking, she stated the following to the group
6.0 will be at 66% availbility by November 05 12.0 late 2007 (via a graph) 24.0 2008 on ADSL2+ (High Def TV - IPTV !!!)
All on based on short copper loops ( less than 5K ft) to the DSM, 46% of homes in BS Territory are on short loops now with a target of 80%. She stated that BS has been installing "lots" of fiber out to the remote terminals and will installing more to get to the 80% saturation. There is NOT a push to get Fiber to the curb in all cases, the copper loops are more advantagous (less capital) and work well now. (in actual field tests)
Here is the amazing part to me..in reference to DSL in general...BS serves 13.3 million with about 1.1 millon on fiber. 76% have DSL coverage and 80% of that 76% are at the 3.0 level now. Now to me that is amazing saturation in just a couple of years. (note to self...buy stock)
I know this is not new to some, but it made me think really good about "what's to come" |

A few days ago I had an occasion to call BS DSL for an unrelated problem. I asked about this "rumor". Yes, originally October 8 was supposed to be the roll-out date, but the crews dedicated to that were sent to help out with the Katrina recovery. No date as to when they would roll it out. |

| I went to a client the other day and she had Comcast HSI. Just out of curiosity I did some speed tests. The DL never fell below 6.1 and she said that there was another speed level for $10 more which she didn't care for/need.
I'm not too familiar with the offerings of Comcast, but it is really a shame to BS that they are lagging so far behind. Yes true, not everybody needs 6.0 or maybe even 3.0 but let's face it, it's good to have it.
So even if BS releases 6.0 soon, they are already behind the speed race and will be for quite some time, until they get their act together.
FYI, yes I know that BS provides a decent DSL system and DSL is superior compared to Cable, however, pretty much only a few percent of the gen-pop knows this, and to everyone else beyond the circle of tech-savvy, it seems like cable is the way to go... I'm sticking with BSFA at least until I move to a different city but BS really is letting the cable guys most of the gloating.
Cheers,

Cheers, Dan Your first mistake was comparing to DSL to Cable, like comparing apple to oranges. Comcast and other cable providers may be offering 6+mbps down, but BS offering 6.0 does not put then "behind the speed race".
Latency with DSL is ohh so much lower. I love DSL. -- YourIP.US - Quickly Locate Your IP! LiveWhois.Net - It's Never Been So Easy! RR.CX My Blog.. |
