[Wireless] New Linksys WRT54G V5??

I took a quick look at linksys' website this morning and I saw that they have posted their newest WRT54G v.5 on their website. I didn't think that they would release their newest router now after releasing their V4 router not too long ago.
Anyone know why they are releasing a new router now in such short time in between v4 and v5?

WRT54G v5

Access™2 (WPA2),
Push button setup feature makes wireless configuration secure and simple.
The new push button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. Just push the button on the router and on your other SecureEasySetup-enabled wireless device to automatically create an encryption-secured wireless connection. Wi-Fi Protected Access™2 (WPA2) protects your data and privacy with up to 128-bit industrial-strength encryption.

The only apparent difference is that the power supply on the v5 is slightly different than the V4 and the v5 chips all run on 3.3V now.

On the V4's the power supply section was much more complex because some chips required +/-5V.

None of that is in the description for the v4. I don't see it.

I don't know if it's exactly the same, but I do have a -G v4 with a push-button Cisco logo that starts Secure Easy Setup.

can one tell by looking at the retail box if it`s a v5?, serial number maybe?

  From Linksys:

If you are trying to find out the firmware format used on the WRT54Gv5, it is VxWorks unlike the Linux GPL of the earlier hardware versions of the WRT54G. Aside from the WRT54Gv5, the WRT54GSV4 and WRT54GSv5 firmware are VxWorks-based.

I bought the v5 today from Best Buy and didn't see anything on the box that tells the version number.

I bought a WRT54G today at Fry's Electronic. On sale for $39.99 with $15 rebate.

I noticed that there are two different boxes (almost identical). The one I bought says that it includes: Intel Smart Wireless Solutions, SecureEasySetup and WPA2 & WMM. The other box is without Intel Smart Wireless Solutions but has the other two.

I'm plan to check the other box that has no Intel Smart Wireless Solutions to see if that is the WRT54Gv5.

Version 5 has the push button on the front.. I made a mistake of Pressing it while setting up 8 Computers on the network and had a little problem getting it to turn off but I finally got it.

Version 5 has serial number starting with CDFB.

I returned mine and got a WRT54GS w/ CC after a pricematch.

Got it down to 70.00 - 15.00 rebate. Don't know if I want to use Openwrt or DDWRT firmware yet.

the main difference between other versions and v5 is that you cant use third party firmwares(such as hypert wrt,and others)in v5.
linksys is smart isnt it?;);)

There is some reasoning in v.5 modifications. It is cheaper to make since it uses less memory (VxWorks is smaller in size than Linux). At this point retail price for WRT54G v.5 is the same as for older revisions but I would not be surprised if it starts trending lower.

I have a strong opinion that buying v.5 at current prices is not a good deal for consumers since older revisions can found on shelves at most US stores (CC, BB and CompUSA).

The box I picked up had the Intel Smart Wireless Solutions on the front. It was a V3. The v5 I took back to Best Buy did not have this on the front.

Therefore, if you don't want a v5 looks for Intel Smart Wireless Solutions on the left hand side of the box front.
