Well, it looks like the scammers are as busy as ever. My wife bought some software on 10-03-05, from a company called removed by moderator out of Texas. On 10-06-05, her debit card was charged $24.99 by Digital Age 888-529-98 Cyprus. She has been shopping online for 7 years and has never had a problem. My question is this, it is only debit cards that are being affected or are credit cards being hit as well? Her debit card was through Bank of America. A quick phone call to their fraud department, and a handy pair of scissors, now make the account inaccessable. It pisses me off I tell ya...the site said it was secure. I have 1/2 a mind to dial everything from 9801-9899 from a payphone just to see who answers with cyprus.....

| reply to Doctor Olds Yup..they hit me too. Visa debit card (2nd one this year cancelled due to scammers). I would really be curious who the software company was in TX as I just bought some too and now this. It was removed by a mod but if you could PM me that would be great. |

1 edit | reply to Doctor Olds I removed company name because this particular scam does not seem to be related to any particular online company (see »www2.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14286212 - this scam is discussed there as well). It is most likely caused by one of the several well known security breaches at banks and credit card processing companies.
Unless there is rock solid proof that a company is involved with this scam, company information should not be posted. The obvious reason is to not falsely accuse the innocent without any evidence.
I was a victim of one of these online thefts; I take great care to protect my card number, and it still was used by a criminal. Many people have never used their credit card online, and those credit card numbers were also used. You might want to read up on this in the other thread. -- Give generously to the Red Cross Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund |

Oops! Thanks Mr. Moderator for catching my faux pas. You know, if they hit 100,000 accounts, that's $2,499,000. Now consider that some people don't bother to check their bill and just pay it. That's still quite a haul. Is there a map or list of cards that have been hit?

| reply to Deeply Shrouded Digital Age 888-529-98 Cyprus Ironic, but if the missing 2 digits of this number were 37 it would spell out 888-lawyer. Trouble is if this company is a front, flybynight, whatever (and with the number of people getting hit it is obviously a scam of some sort), then the 8 digits in that phone# cannot be assumed to be valid. I doubt wardialing the last 2 digits would turn up any useful results. Still, it would be entertaining to try... |

| reply to Doctor Olds I got a $24.99 charge from Digital Age on 10/11/05. I went to my CU and canceled my debt card immediately. The only thing I have done on the internet recently is go the the US Postal Service website to change my address. They charge $1.00. Two days after their charge hit, the charge from Digital Age hit. I filled out the complaint form with the IFCC.:( |

I got scammed also 10/3. To make matters worse my bank is not being helpful. They refuse to believe I didn't make the charge. Digital age $24.99, and they want me to call the company and dispute it there. They're using debit cards, which don't offer the protection credit cards do. |

@az.us | reply to Doctor Olds I had a 24.99 charge from Digital Age and a 15.00 charge from Keystone4Wealth. I called my credit card company and they are removing the charges, issuing me a new card, and I won't be charged. This was on a US Bank Visa. |

Our coporate VISA card has been hit by an unauthorized $24.99 charge with a transaction date of 9/18/05. Description reads "Digital Age 888-529-98 Cyprus". We did not see any of the other fraudulant charges referred to in other postings on this subject. |

Maybe you can motivate the bank to Google it for further enlightenment. Tell the bank to give you a correct phone number other than the Bradenton, FL car dealer.
You are correct in that a debit card does not have the legal protection of a credit card. However, that transaction was processed thru the Visa or Mastercard system and there are fraud policies, and guaranteed liabilities in effect. Contact your bank to find out what the policy and procedure is for your card, and dispute the charge in writing. If they continue to not be helpful speak to your branch manager, and let us know.

I already have a new card and both charges were reversed to the fraudulent chargers involved. The initial charge test didn't involve actual funds if you read my post as it was a test.
I have *never* used Amazon, PayPal or cardsystems so you should reformulate the speculation to that of the actual leak is from inside the Credit Companies, not outside as you are grasping at.
I posted here to warn others, that's all. Good Day.

| I can clarify to say that to my knowledge and based on my very limited CC use anywhere that it is highly unlikely I've ever used them.
I have one reoccurring charge from my ISP each month (Earthlink) and I use my card once or twice a year at Sears. I pay for my gas with cash/checks as I don't have a gas card. I also will never own a debit card.

Add me to this list - October 11, 2005 I was hit by the Digital Age scam for $24.99. The only information I could find on them was on my credit card. "Digital Age 888-529-98, Cyprus,5" Later I found out from my credit card company they were from overseas, however she couldn't (or wouldn't) tell where. I have lost all confidence in the system and now I only prefer do things on a cash bases. |
