[scam] Digital Age, KCSOFTLLC and Coastal Wave Int

This post has been edited to include this note from the forum moderator:
»www2.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14565471
end of edit.

A triple header.

September 11th, 2005

First a test charge authorization of $1.00 dollar from:

Telecommunications Equipment
Coastal Wave Internet
Port Clinton, OH

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

September 23rd, 2005

Then a $9.95 charge from:

KCSOFTLLC.com
Rochester, NY

Listed on BBB Warning page since March 24th, 2005
»www.spokane.bbb.org/alerts/alert···wstype=1

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

September 24rd, 2005

Then a $24.99 charge from:

Digital Age
Cypress

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It looks like someone is testing the card and if the Auth goes through, then the other companies hit the card for their charges. Or is it just unrelated? One company is apparently legit.

Anyone else with these 3?

Doctor Olds

Doctor, if you look through the other threads in this forum, you'll see that the latter two charges have shown up for other people here:

»$9.95 scam, now from kcsoftllc.com

»Trouble Bubble LLC Collegeville?

Re: [scam] Digital Age, KCSOFTLLC and Coastal Wave

Yes, I did search the Forum as well as Google and elsewhere, but there were no posts with two (2) name matches together much less all three (3). I did post in the »$9.95 scam, now from kcsoftllc.com thread to keep it updated.

The strangest thing is the Ohio Wireless ISP that charged an Auth on my card and yet I've never been to Ohio and I am not a Yacht owner (their primary target customer base) so who is using their CC processor to test cards for being valid? That sounds very suspicious.

That is a typical MO of how some of these frauds operate. IMO you are on the right track and your card was tested thru Coastalwave with the $1 charge.

My guess is that Coastalwave's merchant account was hacked or compromised. The scammers will usually hack them on weekends, and run hundreds of tests to validate cards. Since you are an interested party you may want to call them
»www.coastalwave.net/contact.php and enquire about the test on your card. I would not be surprised if that was the case.

Did your bank give you any contact info for the Digital Age charge ?? a phone number maybe or address?. Cyprus seems to be a favorite scam location.

As already posted, both KCSOFTLLC and Trouble Bubble are under the umbrella of the Devbill.com Credit Card scam operations.

Some merchant accounts operate with essentially no security, allowing anyone that reads the code on a site to place charges as though they were the merchant, and look at the merchant's account to see if they went through. The merchant then finds his account has been closed by his merchant bank, and his 800 number overwhelmed by phone calls. Sounds like the case here.

Looks like the previous posts are old but I just got hit with $24.99 from Cyprus Digital Age on 9/19/05 and there is only part of an 888 number. I am disputing this with the bank but they say this transaction is something I signed for! I knew it had to be bogus transaction. Anyone else had this recently??

Does 09-24-2005 count as recent as my post above shows?

Yes it does. After I posted my message I saw the more recent posts. My CU just credited my account after saying I would not get the money back!

I was doing some on line banking and found a charge for $24.99 from...you guessed it...DIGITAL AGE 888-529-98 CYPRUS / SE. I contacted my credit union and they have cancelled my debit card for this account. I have never used this debit card for anything other than actual hands on purchases including Safeway, Albertson's and various other grocery stores / drug stores. Never for anything online. I have filled out the complaint form at the FBI web site mentioned in other posts. I'll keep watching this thread for other ideas!

Yep, just got hit with a $24.99 charge from Digital Age, Cypruss as of yesterday 10/6/05. My bank is happily taking care of this for me, but moving to a new card etc... is the real pain.

Also filed report at www.ifccfbi.gov (sometime you just gotta involve the feds...) ;-(

We recently had a charge on our credit card account from Digital Age, in Cyprus, Sweden, with the partial phone # of 888-529-98. Our credit card company notified us of this transaction before we had received our statement.

Wouldn't this be easy to trace? Where is the electronic funds transfer being deposited? In the United States?
Sweden?

Re: [scam] Digital Age, KCSOFTLLC and Coastal Wave Internet

The merchant account is in Sweden. The perpetrators are apparently in Cyprus, but maybe not. After the money was received into the crook's account at the merchant bank he took it out as a check or another transfer.

Stopped (by mastercard) on October 12. Don't know is they were caught or not. They were only around for about a month.

Re: [scam] Digital Age, KCSOFTLLC and Coastal Wave

I got 10/10 DIGITAL AGE 888-529-98 CYPRUS SWE 24.99
on my Chase Mastercard, which I use for everything online, so I couldn't even begin to tell you where to look. I remember Newegg.com, amazon, probably ebay, PayPal, who knows what else?

The first Chase representative emphasized again and again that I should ask my husband if he knew anything about the charge, and even said it's probably not a fraud because it's so small! I said I've been fraudulently charged before by someone who just did a little on everyone's card. When I called back after finding that hundreds of others have had the same fraudulent charge, the next representative happily cancelled the #, but pretended to know nothing about Digital Age, and said she'd be mailing an affidavit for me to fill out and have notorized. Now that I know the extent of this scam, it's *outrageous* that I should have to do ANYthing, when they know that it's a documented fraud.

Ah, communications.

I don't know how credit card companies work, other than not very well. But I can tell you that Mastercard shut these folks down on the 12th of October. It seems reasonable that not every rep is told about every fraud, but you would think that there would be a handy database that they could key the name in and find out.

I would tell them that this is a known fraud, that mastercard security is aware of it, and that they need to deal with this, not you. You and I pay a hell of a lot for credit card services and we ought to be getting them.

I've seen it too. It bills out of Sweden, but most credit card companies are aware and catching them before they get thru. Fraud rings set up ficticious businesses and name them after real reputable companies so if you see the charge on your statement you will think that it is legit.

Digital Age Scam - Cyprus SE

This SCAM is also hitting Government
Agencies, at least at the State level. Since
we are guardians of the peoples money, we
are mandated to use State designated websites
or websites that must meet some darn stringent
parameters...with the only deviation I have
seen in my 22 years as a public servant being
an emergency purchase. Purchasing from Ebay
is prohibited, as well as using Pay Pal or
other escrow companies. So I'm inclined to
support the Database Has Been Hacked
theory. By whom, remains to be seen, with
some odds on favorites being: (1) The inside
man (2) A disgruntled employee (3) A government
monitoring agency (4) A terrorist cell (5) A
diversion for some other heinous crime (6) Maybe
even a genetically abhorrent person who lacks the
gene combination for sensing right from wrong or
for feeling remorse for transgressions & violations
against those of us who have been sullied by this
most foul perpetrator(s)...

It isn't amazon, or any other e-commerce company, that is being used as a source for these scams.

There is a leak inside the credit card system somewhere, something that allows card numbers to be tested fast enough and without detection. Credit card numbers are simply not long enough and as you know, the "security" code on the back, and the persons full billing address, is not always required by every vendor putting through a charge, thus, these details are not required. Full Stop. I'm not even sure the name is required.

So all you need (as a bad-guy vendor with e-access to bank billing) is valid numbers and expiry dates. If you really need something else like a zip code, perhaps the DECLINED transaction returns "DECLINED - ZIP INVALID" so then you have a good number, and the problem is reduced to just having to guess the ZIP.

I'd bet there are weaknesses within the huge card processing industry that allow a bank of valid numbers and expiry dates to be built up, without detection, and then the fraudsters electronically charge 1000s of people at once, transfer the money away, and leave their fake-vendor vehicle empty for the slow bank fraud departments to find and close. Then they move on and do it all again.

So there is no point comparing where you used the card. It isn't the problem.

Re: [scam] Digital Age, KCSOFTLLC and Coastal Wave

The "leak" is well-known. (Not so much so that I will post all the details here!) Basically, you need access to a merchant account, then you run a small charge, say $1.00, on all the cards. When the merchant finds his account shut the next day, who cares?

This is exactly the problem. What gets me is the non-chalant attitude some of the banks have about the whole situation. Meanwhile while we're here trying to get to the bottom of the scam the banks don't have any problems with charging interest on these bogus charges while the charge is investigated.

When are they going to get off their lazy arses and either catch the criminals and/or fix the system???

I had an attempted debit on my pay pal acct yesterday. fortunately it was denied but I have money today and this scares me. where are they getting these card numbers. U use mine mostly at grocery stores and only on christian web sites. I have used ebay and half.com...and wonder it this could be the culprit?

I usually do those with pay pal directly, not giving the card number.

Im on hold waiting for the pay pal people to pick up the phone...so I can report this and cancel the card.

what else should I do. Im glad to find this site on google...I didn't have a clue what was going on.

Well, it looks like the scammers are as busy as ever.
My wife bought some software on 10-03-05, from a company
called removed by moderator out of Texas.
On 10-06-05, her debit card was charged $24.99
by Digital Age 888-529-98 Cyprus.
She has been shopping online for 7 years and has never had
a problem. My question is this, it is only debit cards that
are being affected or are credit cards being hit as well?
Her debit card was through Bank of America.
A quick phone call to their fraud department, and a handy
pair of scissors, now make the account inaccessable.
It pisses me off I tell ya...the site said it was secure.
I have 1/2 a mind to dial everything from 9801-9899 from a
payphone just to see who answers with cyprus.....

Oops! Thanks Mr. Moderator for catching my faux pas.
You know, if they hit 100,000 accounts, that's $2,499,000.
Now consider that some people don't bother to check their

Is there a map or list of cards that have been hit?

Ironic, but if the missing 2 digits of this number were 37 it would spell out 888-lawyer. Trouble is if this company is a front, flybynight, whatever (and with the number of people getting hit it is obviously a scam of some sort), then the 8 digits in that phone# cannot be assumed to be valid. I doubt wardialing the last 2 digits would turn up any useful results. Still, it would be entertaining to try...
