No ads No programs

Ads are what payees the actors, the network, and the broadcasting. If everyone stops watching the ads then actors quit, network goes out of business, broad casters quit. Then all tivo, dvrs, vcrs ,and tv are useless. It is even possible there be no cable internet service.

What does me watching the ads do for them exactly? Whether I watch them or not, they don't get any more money from me. I pay for the channel. I could get up and go to the bathroom every time a commercial comes on which would constitute me "not watching the commercial". Now whether I get up and go somewhere and not watch it or I simply "skip it" with a feature it amounts to the same thing. So how do they know if I am watching it even if I don't have a way to "skip it"?? Do they lose money every time I go to the bathroom? Better eat more prunes then.

I can agree with that.

OK, then let's extend that logic a bit.

Watching ads makes money for the networks. A PVR allows me to watch shows I might not be able to watch otherwise, due to time conflicts. Therefore, I have the chance to watch more ads, thereby making the networks more money.

So, if I have to watch these ads, why should I have to pay for a PVR subscription? Even if I'm expected to pay something for the convenience of easy time-shifting, scheduling, etc., it would seem that the networks whose shows I'm watching should kick in some toward my subscription to compensate me for watching ads I might not see if I didn't use the PVR.

Not entirely accurate. The watching of ads does not generate revenue - someone ultimately has to purchase the advertised product for money to change hands.

The production and airing of ads is a calculated risk by merchants. Ad sales people imply that their number of viewers for a particular show equates to viewers of ads, which theoretically increases product sales, which allows the TV folks to charge higher advertising rates. There are a lot of assumptions to that system.

What's the best way to keep people from skipping ads? Make them more entertaining. Make them something people want to ask their friends if they've seen. And, for Pete's sake, limit the amount and repetition!

The advertisers seem to have forgotten that there's an oversaturation point. If there are too many ads, people will start finding ways to skip them or simply give up and not watch anything at all (maybe this is for the overall good).

I don't pay quite as much, but I have several friends who pay $90 a month for programming. That's over $1000 per year!!! For that kind of money I can buy the TV series on DVD for every show I watch. Plus several dozen movies. And still save hundreds of dollars.

But wait! There's more! Buy our DVD now and we'll throw in 10 video ads, FREE!
But that's not all ..... these ads are so good that we'll disallow you to skip them
on a standard DVD player. And that's not all! Absolutely free of charge we'll
include traditional PAPER-based advertising inside the DVD box! Hurry, you don't
want to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Operators are standing by.

So now I don't even buy that many DVD's anymore. I'll wait until I can rent them as old releases on two-for-one days at the grocery store. 49 cents a pop that way. Keep 'em for a week.

If they offer me something I want, in the way I want it, for a reasonable price ... I'll buy it. But once they notice that I'm buying it and then start to add more unwanted junk ... then I'll stop buying it. If I stop buying it this only hurts them. Plenty of other things for me to do with my spare time. So far I haven't run into a single ad while hiking, flying my kite, or looking through my telescope.
