Does anyone know?
I'm in the market for a laptop. I decided my next one should be a Mac, but I don't want to buy phased-out hardware. |

| reply to sirozha Apple will probably be supporting PPC based laptops for at least the next three years. Id bet even longer. Hell, they still have limited support for OS 9, and that was four years ago. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

| reply to sirozha A few of us think it will be by christmas but were not sure what model will be first. The PowerMac's seem a likely canidate but there's no dual processor dev machine that I've seen available.
But Steve Jobs has to be a idiot to say July 2006 and stick with that date.. by April nobody will be buying any Mac's knowing that a new lineup will be about to come out. So were expecting something by Christmas. Otherwise if christmas passes and no Intel Mac's then I'm sure their stock will go from buy to hold and if not by Q1 then it surely will go to sell as Apple will begin to bleed serious money as sales drop off in anticipation of new intel models. -- »www.silentbrouhaha.com |

| I think professionals may actually snatch up the last of the PPC Macs, similar to the run on OS 9 compatible units way back when. Despite what Apple may claim, applications are going to have switching pains all over again, and if my company relied on Mac software, I would make sure we had enough machines to continue running for a good long time while things got sorted out.

| reply to sirozha There are a LOT of companies that lease these PowerPCs for 3 and 4 years....the ability to do dual binary for applications is gonna allow for dual platform development and make it cheaper for applications to arrive at the same time...
As for machines....has Apple said it will be a wholesale switchover? All I have seen is the tower G5 being offered to developers....was the eMac and iMac gonna also switch? I didn't think so, not until well after the pro machines. If that is the case then you'll see Apple support for the laptops, school machines and iMac as well as the current G5s go well into 2010....or beyond. -- Wanna pay $4.00 for a head of lettuce? $5.00 for a quart of strawberries? We'll see what we'll see though...

That will go on no matter what, when, how, where or why...and I'm going to venture a guess...that the same thing will happen with G5s that happened with the G4 OS X only boot machines....they will continue to make them (G5s) for well after the switch to accommodate the "WAY late to the party" vendors like QuarkXPress. -- Wanna pay $4.00 for a head of lettuce? $5.00 for a quart of strawberries? | reply to sirozha If you want to use the past as a comparison, Apple supported the 68K (with MacOS updates) for 4 years after the PowerPC was introduced. Then again, only 6 months after dropping the Apple IIGS they ceased System Software updates for that platform.
At any rate, they have to keep supporting PowerPC machines as a show of good faith, and keep customers loyal. The complete abandonment of the Apple II line had a huge negative impact on Apple in the long term, especially in the educational market. Apple's market share wouldn't be hovering around 2% today had things been handled differently. They made sure not to repeat that mistake in 1994, and hopefully will avoid it again in 2006. |

then switch the consumer/students... It's the low-end Intel processors that will be ready first, per the roadmap; and it's the low-end PowerPC processors -- the G4s -- that are more urgently in need of replacement. As I understand it, Intel is not yet ready to beat the G5. |
