Be interesting to see if the same thing happens to the Family Guy repeat on Adult Swim.

Is there alternate firmware for TiVO? Does TiVO require the service to operate or can it run as a digital VCR without the TiVO program guide?

Or you could just not allow your Tivo to update its software. (by not hooking up the phone line) I have the original Tivo software that came with my Series 2 Direct Tivo from a few years back. I get no banners, spam or recording restrictions. The hardware works well, its just they keep trying to break it for some reason.

You can easily find original images of pre updated Tivo's floating around the usual places. Or you could just install your own, that works just as well.

I think DirecTiVo is immune from most of these things even with software updates.

I couldn't stop mine from updating. I lost functionality. It would grab the software updates at the same time it did program data.
