Politicians are so sold to special interests

They passed this law in 2nd special session which is called to find solutions for school/education financing and reducing local property taxes in Texas. They have failed both objectives but passed this in 5mins in the 2nd special session. It shows where the priorities really are!

FYI, TX Governor, Senate and House as well as all state level elected offices are Republican controlled, so one would naturally expect that they would reach agreements easily for schools etc. right? Apparently not if public does not have lobbying power like SBC and Verizon could put.

The end result is that increasing the tax burden of everyone in cities because over time cities will have to make up for lost revenues and there will be redlining of services (Telco/Cable co will not offer service uniformly within the city)

Well done politicians and congratulations for SBC and Verizon lobbyists. Your hard work has paid off. Collect your nice checks now.

Hey I agree but this was also a needed law to get progress going on something that is just as important.

I've seen the "Proposals" for school finance and frankly I would most likely save more money via the telecom franchise law than any realignment of state taxes for schools.

And while there is a problem with state taxes here funding the schools the individual school districts are horribly innefficient. New AC for 3 year old schools? Dedicated buildings for football and band programs.. WTH!
