i was told that this was now available to install a ont in my apt. does it pay to go from vol dsl 1.5 to fios 5.0 if i upgrade do i get a $5 discount, am i loicked in for another year, and what speed can one actually get.
I believe the $5 discount is for having a Freedom calling package, If you don't make a lot of long distance calls, then it's not worth it.

Verizon offered a $10/month discount for existing DSL subscribers. I'm not sure if it's still available, since the flyer I had said the offer was good until 8/31/05. However, you can try calling 800-805-1705 and ask for it. It should make the upgrade virtually cost-free. There should be no one-year commitment, however that may change soon.

Also, I got a flyer in the mail this week advertising Fios 5/2 for 34.99 ***with*** a 12 month commitment, but ***without*** the calling package. I think this is a new promotion, as I had never heard of anything like it before. Sorry, I don't have the phone number.

And yes, it is worth it, even for $10 more than dsl. If nothing else, you may be able to sign up for Verizon TV in the next few months (depending on where you live). The TV service should signficantly better and cheaper than cable. Maybe even cheaper than satellite.

The speeds are very close to advertised. And so far, there is no congestion because most people haven't switched over yet. Verizon has lots of excess bandwidth on the main fiber lines. No one knows what will happen a year from now, but in all likelihood, the quality will be the same or better (if they switch to GPON).
