I believe the $5 discount is for having a Freedom calling package, If you don't make a lot of long distance calls, then it's not worth it.
Verizon offered a $10/month discount for existing DSL subscribers. I'm not sure if it's still available, since the flyer I had said the offer was good until 8/31/05. However, you can try calling 800-805-1705 and ask for it. It should make the upgrade virtually cost-free. There should be no one-year commitment, however that may change soon.
Also, I got a flyer in the mail this week advertising Fios 5/2 for 34.99 ***with*** a 12 month commitment, but ***without*** the calling package. I think this is a new promotion, as I had never heard of anything like it before. Sorry, I don't have the phone number.
And yes, it is worth it, even for $10 more than dsl. If nothing else, you may be able to sign up for Verizon TV in the next few months (depending on where you live). The TV service should signficantly better and cheaper than cable. Maybe even cheaper than satellite.
The speeds are very close to advertised. And so far, there is no congestion because most people haven't switched over yet. Verizon has lots of excess bandwidth on the main fiber lines. No one knows what will happen a year from now, but in all likelihood, the quality will be the same or better (if they switch to GPON). |

| According to his profile he was in NY.
So does this mean that NYC MDU's will be installed soon? I take it since his area was probably prewired already, his MDU then went online.
But the question is when will predominantly MDU areas go online that dont have alot of houses nearby like Manhattan where its ALL MDUs for the most part. |

Telcoguru Premium join:2005-08-22 Fresh Meadows, NY | reply to pawelp I've seen Fios installed in 3 different apartments in Nassau County New York. They ran the fiber straight to the apartment. They used a SDU instead of a MDU. I can just imagine 20 SDU's on the back of an apartment building. One ticked off landlord. |
