| Site survey tools? Maybe "site survey" isn't quite the right term to use. I got my radio and 'tenna mounted and ready to go. What I want to do is drive around to quantitatively find my signal footprint.
I have the laptop, Orinoco card, roofmount antenna, and GPS, what I lack is software. Does anyone know of a program that will just make a list of lat/long and signal strength readings for a particular AP? NetStumbler isn't designed for this particular task (though wardriving can be a hoot; you'd be astonished just how many unsecured APs there are out there ).
I know the crappy little 5dbi mobile antenna won't give me a true picture of where I could be using an 18dbi panel or 24dbi grid, I just want a basic idea of where to start my marketing. | |

| Re: Site survey tools? I agree with Chele about test what you are going to use, but for general coverage knowledge I used a 300mW Demarc (even though I hate to promote them with the service I got from them. The card is actually the only good I have gotten from the $579 AP I bought from them) card with an "impath.com" flag yagi on my laptop and got pretty good results (33.97dB total). I figured if I could get a connection in front of the house with that, it should generally be an easy link from the roof with even better equipment. | |

| The Demarc CPE your talking about is pretty much a WRAP board, Star OS (modified) and a 300mw card. All three solid and trusted by WISPs around the globe. Are you sure it's not you? I've dealt with Tony for almost 3 years. Demarc has had some good days and some bad (bad meaning too busy and the phone never gets picked up) TOny tells me their big building is almost built, and then 3-5 more people will come on board. I have always liked the products....so I will stand by and defend my manufacturer I can only see things getting better there in the future. | |

| What your needing is called radio mobile. Its free and can hook up to your GPS and does an awesome job in assisting sight surveys. Doing them by hand ? We build a mobile wireless deployment/testing unit called DaBoom, that fits 1/2 ton pickup trucks. With it you can test signal with the gear/frequency and give acurate details to your installation crew. You can also use it for deploying services for emergencies, temp backhauls and providing bandwidth for events.
