Can I purchase my own cable box?

HI -
I have digital cable. Problem is one my second TV I have no cable box ( Have the DVR model on my main TV). When cable was installed they hooked directly to the back of my TV. For some reason, it did not work. Installer said maybe the tuner was out in the TV. Suggested I hook up through my VCR - I can get some channels (up to 95 because this is as high as the tuner on the VCR will tune in ) but I am missing any channels higher than this.

Can I buy a box from Ebay -- I see they are selling Motorola 2224 model. Will it work on the second TV?

Thanks for any info -- I don't want to waste money if it won't work,

I do not think there is any channels above 95 except digital.
Without a digital cable box you will only get anolog channels.
You most likely cannot buy a used digital cable box on ebay and use it unless insight would activate it for you. Most likely they won't because they want you to rent their box.

no you can not, i work in the greenwood system and i have seen a few people buy them from ebay and such, the problem is you would have to get one that is not stolen, and as we all know, you cant buy these boxes, so they are all in a sense stolen...... So to make a long story short insight will not allow a privately owned box

Thanks for the answers.....so I guess it is not as simple as buying one and hooking it up....Does it require the box be activated by Insight?

I have seen the ads for the sales of boxes that say the cable company can't stop you from buying your own. I guess this is not true from what you are telling me.

So.....my only option to get all the channels I am paying for on my second TV is to rent from them...correct?

I appreciate your help.....I think you have saved some money!!!!! Glad I came to the forum to ask!!:)

Actually Motorola does have a box out there you can buy. It's the DCP-501. Digital box just like the 2000 but it also has an audio amplifier in it and a dvd player. My understanding is that they can authorize this box as long as you have proof of purchase. It just takes a couple of days as they have to go through a process with their datacenter.

Figgered I would throw my nickel in here: Here in Louisville, there are 2 more channels above 95 that have content. Ch 98 is a community bulletin board (no loss if ya don't get it). Ch 99 is the TV Guide channel. However, Indiana maybe different.

I can't believe some of you have channels that high on regular analog. We only go up to 66 here... soon to add channel 67. Well then Gold is 71 and I think the Insight ad with phone number is 72... that's it.

.

I also can not belive you guys have channels that high, here in Evansville ( a fairly large city) we only have up to channel 74, no FOX HD, and no boomerang, and there are 2 other cable companies here, I stick with Insight for their broadband, fastest and most reliable in this area.
