Slow speeds.

Why are speeds for insight so slow, my friend is using insight and she fluctuates between 1100/150 and 500/70. She has only had it active for 4 days and speeds are not increasing. This is for West Lafayette, IN.

Is this normal for a 4000/256 connection.

This depends on a couple of things. Has this person tweaked their connection? Running this test »/tweaks will help determine if the connection is set to obtain the best speeds.

My Insight bookmarks page also has more tips. Keep in mind that many of us that have previously seen great speeds with Insight for the past month or so have reported extremely slow speed results. Most of us began seeing this after some Insight announced maintenance. I've yet to see a change in this situation on my end.

Here is my tweak test.

Although if you look at other post in this forum. You'll see that I'm reporting less than stellar speeds at this time. Even though my setup test as properly configured and registered with Insight.

I'm not a big fan of blaming firewall products for speed problems. But some firewall users have reported issues in regards to speeds when using a firewall. Keep in mind you need this security software in place - especially if your not using a router for inbound protection. A software firewall also gives you outbound protection - something a router doesn't do. It is important to know what is trying to get into your machine as well as what is trying to get out.

While many of us are seeing slower speeds currently. There are others in the same region and / or city that aren't seeing this problem. So Insight is just going to most likely blame this on something on the customers end. Or they will want to setup an in-home visit.

In my case I feel this is a waste of time. Considering I didn't see this problem until after they did maintenance on their end.

If your pc isn't properly registered with Insight. This can also be the reason your seeing slower speeds.

Hey Iggy, I am an Insight subscriber in the Rockford system. The drop off of speeds did coincide with the upgrade of the UBR to a much larger C4 router. This router is capable of load balancing (shifting modems to different ports so that no ports will be overloaded). With the old UBRs balancing had to be done manually transfering modems. This helped relieve the problem of the processor hitting 100% and consequently slowing speeds down. Now that being said, there are still issues just like you have been talking about. I myself have the plus service and am only getting 3000/460. The biggest obstacle is the fact that the problems don't seem to be affecting everyone. I have heard some people reporting with higher than normal speeds, some lower, and some right on. I know that Insight is working on the problem. I think they need to make more adjustments setting up the new C4. It's also possible that it is a provisioning issue. It seems when I do my speed test it will jump up to about 4 meg and then it always settles in at around 3 meg. It's possible that the DOCSIS config files may need to be re-done. Whatever it is I'm sure if enough of us complain they'll have to do something.
