Verizon wants the ONT's placed outside the home but if you want it located inside they will do it for you, after all it's your house. The battery backup unit and power supply unit have to be placed inside the house, about 50ft away is really the farthest you want to go from the ONT. They will run CAT 5e cable from the ONT network port to a D-link router WAN port on the back of the router. Easy access to this equipment should be your main concern in case it needs to be serviced.
I'd probably let them put the ONT outside, no big deal. What kind of power runs from the supply/battery back up to the ONT? If it's AC wiring, I'll have my electrician friend come over and run romex through the ceiling. IF it's just something low voltage (i.e. that I can run over Cat5), I'll run the wire myself.

50' is no problem from the supply/backup to the ONT.

I already plan on wiring a piece of CAT5 through my ceiling from where my router is to where it needs to go out of the house. Likewise, same for my 2 phone lines (might as well rewire, time is right).

If you check out my above diagram, I'd like to prewire whatever power cable is needed, through the ceiling so that they can connect the power supply/battery back up to the ONT and not have to string new wire. Wiring through the ceiling in my basement is a royal pain. It's not a drop ceiling, it's fiberboard, and stapled to cross-layed out beams that are nailed to the studs. The more I can do to help them, the less time they need to spend in my house (and the less time I spend rewiring later on).

Thanks.

Sorry for the double...

How's the Power supply & Battery back up hook up to the ONT?

I'm assuming that battery backup hooks up to the power supply (so the 2 of them are always close proximity). The power supply, I imagine plugs into a regular AC wall outlet, and then has (screw terminals?) where a cable is wired up to that runs to the ONT.

Edit: Subaru, I mean from the power back to the ONT, is it high voltage (needing regular AC electrical cable, like the kind that runs through your walls, i.e. Romex) or low voltage (where it can just be a Cat5 type cable).

The power supply unit needs a household 110v outlet as close to the ONT as practical. The power supply unit also gets a quad iw mounted into the back of the unit. Only one pair is used. It runs back to the ONT. I believe it operates around 22v(low voltage). The battery backup unit gets a special hybrid wire that has 5 alarm wires and 2 power wires to charge the battery. The CAT 5e runs from the ONT to a data jack near your main computer which is plugged into the D-link router supplied. I would just leave drags in your ceiling or walls to help the tech if you want, otherwise let them do their thing.

When they first ran phone service to our house when it was built, they ran the quad wire under the soil and brought it up at the exterior wall right next to where the electrical service comes out of the ground. The NID pokes through the wall into the laundry room right near where the electric service comes in from the meter.

Since then, we have put in a concrete patio and the phone wire now comes trough the concrete about 4 feet from the nearest edge of the patio. It is to the right of a door going into the laundry room. The left hand jamb of the doorway is right at the edge of the patio so there is a clear shot into the room from that side of the doorway.

Do you think that they have some way to get the fiber to an ONT placed where the NID was? If not, I guess I'm going to have to find another place for the ONT. If they do and they take away the abandoned NID, then I'm going to have a couple of ugly holes in my wall. I wonder if they will just leave the unused NID there to cover up the holes behind it.

Also, I suspect that the fiber drop will be coming from a direction opposite where the NID is. Does anyone know whether Vz will have a problem with routing the drop around to near the existing NID or will they want to put the ONT at the point of the house nearest to where the drop will be coming from?

Another placement question I have is whether anyone sees it absolutely necessary to have the router next to the main PC. I was hoping to have VZ put their 604 close to where the ONT comes through the laundry room wall, run some Cat5e from the 604 to my own store-bought 624 mounted on the laundry room ceiling and make the 624 with the IP address tweaked and DHCP disabled a wireless access point for all PCs on my network. In fact, I hope to have the wireless network up and running before they get there and just point them to the 624 rather than a PC.

Any comments pro or con?

Tks.

PS: For planning purposes, any idea how many amps the BBU and the 604 draw?

My DLink is 2' inside the wall the connection comes through, in the basement. The PCs are on the first and second floor. In my case they only had to reach the DLink, the rest was already in place.

They will make a 2 segment run for you. They won't care if it's ONT to DLink, DLink to PC or ONT to DLink, DLink to wireless router.

Hard to argue with that.:)

WOnder how long it will be until they stop being so magnanimous?

Usually the ONT is placed where the old NID was. If not possible the ONT will be mounted somewhere else but the NID is still removed unless there is absolutely no way to feed new IW back to where the protector is located. The router doesn't have to be placed by the main computer. It is just easier to do it that way during installation.
