 Wiki of web dev professionals?

First of all, I've neglected BBR lately. I've been pretty active at SitePoint, but have been disappointed with the lack of replies on several queries. Why didn't I think to try the always-reliable BBR!? On to my question:

I've been toying with the idea of producing a simple table on my website that lists several well-known web standards developers/designers (mezzoblue, zeldman, kottke, simple bits, 9rules, etc). It would just have the developer's name, website, locale, sex (we need more women!), MIME type(s) on their page(s), frequency of posts (if it's a blog), a short summary, and maybe some other tidbits.

A wiki for this kind of information would probably make more sense, though. Does anyone know of a wiki or website that already has information like this? (I suppose I could start something on Wikipedia, but that just doesn't seem like the right place to do something like that.) Not only would it be a good blogroll of sorts, but it would be a great commercial source for finding designers.

I think you'd need to define the purpose and audience of this a bit more for my taste.

Just a listing of the popular web gurus? Why? Those that care (us) already know about them, and it's doubtful potential clients of their's would find out about them through such a site as this.

Not only that, but it's awful nice of you to set up a site to advertise the services of these folks.

Now, a web dev-related (in the general sense) wiki is something I could definitely see value in and get behind.

Thanks for your reply, jD. Good questions! Before I get to the purpose and audience, a little background.... I've had several people ask me about creating or improving a website for them. While I enjoy playing with CSS, my SQL and PHP programming skills aren't good enough to professionally manage a database-driven website. I started looking around the web for reliable, affordable designers, but had trouble. Also, I've found that a list of designers and gurus would be helpful in developing my own accessibly-designed website. The XHTML discussion is one area where using a table to compare different people's implementations could be helpful, or at least interesting! Now that I think about it, it would be hard to collect this type of data on a wiki - some type of sortable database might be best, but I can't think of anything to compare it to! Maybe similar to sortable columns of many web hosting directories - but I don't want it to look like a commercial, ad-infested, worthless site.

Purpose: To compare and learn from the styles and techniques of web professionals across the globe. Also could be a helpful classifieds (yes, it would be "nice of me" to set up this kind of advertising, but I think it would benefit a lot of people).

Audience: Anyone wanting to improve their own website (whether they do it themselves or are looking for someone to build it for them).

Hmmm. I'm still in the dark a bit, I apologize.

I'm unclear on what people are comparing? Implementations of what? Specific code snippets? Whole websites - which would be hard to quantitatively compare.

A sortable database of developers? Web hosts? Code?

Are we talking about a code library?

A sortable database of developers; not a code library.

The wiki or website database would have a page for each developer/design company and then the aspects of their own website (MIME type, etc. as I mentioned initially) as well as any services that they render - a screenshot would probably be helpful, too, somewhat like cssvault or stylegala. Then you could also search the site and sort by any of these aspects.

Ok, I understand now, but you should think about this from the searchers point of view. I've worked at an agency for over 7 years and not one person has inquired about what MIME type our web site is in. It simply doesn't matter. Frankly, I haven't had another developer ask me.

This site should have information that is relevant to a searcher, likely owner of a small company or person in charge of marketing for a company.

And to tell you the truth, there's already a lot of these out there. »www.firmlist.com is the best I know of.

It is a tad out dated.. but is good... except there are the occasional few that say they are from areas, and they are not, but other than that they are pretty good.

Firmslist looks pretty good, although it doesn't have a lot of the additional information listed other than the name of the firm - »us.firmlist.com/tennessee/nashville.phtml for example. I guess I'll make my own simple table at some point since there doesn't seem to be a need for what I'm looking for! I just thought that it would be a helpful, forward-looking tool and community to promote better web building practices (yet another purpose).
