| reply to PetePuma I was going to post this information, but didn't want to be the bearer of bad news for the Sygate users. I read where Symantec is going to 'improve' on the product by adding such things as LiveUpdate, etc. Oh, Boy! -- "You will find that the mere resolve not to be useless, and the honest desire to help other people, will, in the quickest and delicatest ways, improve yourself" - John Ruskin |

Anything out there anymore that is JUST a firewall, and not a suite? @cable.rogers | reply to PetePuma Maybe they can fix the "Act as Server" by default and improve the look of Sygate. For example maybe something like ZA where everything is in one window, is organized. Keep the logging though. |

I guess you guys dont see the writing on the wall. Standalone products are gone. Vendors with standalone products can't compete with those that do. They will get bought out, unless they have an alternate model to make money.
Besides I think it benefits most novice consumers who dont have the technical background to go out an research half a dozen standalone product.. and thats assuming you can get all of them to play nice and you have a decent footprint after installing all of them..
Norton started the Suite trend lets see... back in 2000 with their 2001 product line. McAfee soon followed with MIS. After that its been anyone and everyone that has a decent AV product.. KAV, Trend. Soon you will likely see Computer Associates now that they have acquired Tiny.
So yep.. for those of you that only want a pure firewall you have three choices: a) use the built in Windows firewall which sucks b) continue to use the existing version of your favorite product. c) hope that a new startup will come along that will build a standalone firewall (possibly have a free version to attract customers), only to be acquired a few years later by another giant. The cycle goes on.. |

| reply to loopy2003 The problem is, I haven't seen any suites that are as good as separate programs I can pick and choose. Not to mention you can kill them in one place vs several.
It's just a pain. When I had ZA screw up on me, I was able to just replace ZA, but keep my antivirus, anti spyware, etc the same. Suites take that away from me.
Looks like I may just stick with the year old version I have now, has yet to be compromised, and works well. -- Opera 8.02(Build 7680); Windows XP Pro SP2;Athlon 64 3400+; 1GB PC3200 DDR; 1M/128k DSL; NOD32(Version 2.5.25); Sygate Pro 5.5(Build 2637);Proxomitron 4.5j Grypen 7/26/05(Opera mod),GPG ID:0x0A1C6EE3 |

This is bad news. Sygate was the last of the "plain" firewalls. I'm still using Kerio 2.15, but have had Sygate in mind as a back up if the old Kerio becomes too outdated to use. There is a market for those of us who hate Suites and don't want all the crap that's being loaded in firewalls these days. I have no doubt someone will listen and fill the gap eventually. -- God put me on this Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now, I am so far behind I will never die. |

Heck no..there's LookNStop, 8signs, etc. Lots of them.
Boy, I sure do like my 8signs...[chuckle]
Hasn't changed much since the 90's, and I like it that way. Does it's job, and stays the hell outa my way.
[rant] Firewalls are meant to control packets and protocols, not make up for users who don't care to learn anything about the Internet, yet want to be protected from those who do. [/rant]

If you have a functional NAT router there's nothing wrong with using existing, older firewall software for outbound monitoring... forever. Any newly exposed vulnerabilities in the firewall software are largely irrelevant when no unsolicited traffic's getting in anyway.
