[Modem] Westell 6100 with Linksys WRT54G + webcam

I've read alot in this forum, and never really had a reason to post, as someone usually already solved any problems I had in this forum.

Here's the situation:
I've got the Westell 6100 setup as a bridged Ethernet. The Linksys WRT54G handling the PPPoE connection to Bellsouth. I can surf the web, check email, etc just fine. (Used the instructions found here.)

I recently bought a D-Link DCS-900W web cam. I set it up wirelessly and it works fine within my network. I can view it with any computer connected to my LAN.

I have set the port forwarding to the cam on the router; but when people on the internet try to access the cam, it times outs on them.

I've been on the phone with both Linksys and D-Link tech support for days...and they have no idea...the last thing we checked was whether or not the ports were even open on the router. The 'block anonymous internet request' is disabled. ports 85 and ports 8482 are open on the router, but when the linksys guys tried to ping those ports they get nothing. I tried to enable the remote access to the router (port 8080) so they could take a look, but they still couldn't get in.

So either the router really isn't opening the ports, or the modem is blocking them somehow...

I was wondering if there is something about the westell modem that might be restricting access. Or something else I'm not think of? Any thoughts?

Sorry if I'm rambling, just trying to be detailed...

remote admin on the router is not working?maybe you have set "block WAN request enabled". in any circumstances that port forwarding is not working you might try DMZ. but the disadvantage of having DMZ is that all the ports are open hence it would make your pc vulnerable. or you can try triggering the ports. Since you have a westell modem you might try this if it would work. you can set the modem as your primary router and set the Linksys router to work only as an access point switch. disable the DHCP of the linksys. set the linksys router to obtain an ip address automatically and connect the westell to the ethernet port bypassing the NAT. see if it would work.

haha, wow. I have been trying to do the SAME THING!
Except for the fact that I was trying to set up the cam at a friend house. He has: The same modem, I have the same camera, and he's also got the exact same router!
Crazy stuff.
I ended up giving up, BUT, there is plenty of information on my previous thread: »[Home Network] Trying to set up a web camera on DSL, no luck

I gave up because I didn't want to bug my friend all that much (the cam was for a small tourism website). I have been on cable and everything has worked fine, but DSL was another story. I just ordered DSL and it should be here soon and I should be able to test it some more and get it working. One thing I forgot to do was log into the router and forward the ports from it (192.168.1.254).

Re: [Modem] Westell 6100 with Linksys WRT54G + web

I would say that it's the Linksys. The Westell in bridged would not be blocking anything.

I spent two more days on the phone with Linksys technical support, and they couldn't figure out what the problem was, and why the ports weren't opening.

After digging around the net for a few days, I found another forum that post from people who were having the same problem. Its a problem with the router firmware! Turns out, for some reason, it doesn't effect everybody. But in a few cases the firmware and router just screws up port forwarding.

The solution on the forum was to use a third party firmware for the router. This bothered me since I didn't know much about the 3rd party, and did want to risk it. So I went to Best Buy, bought a new D-Link DI-524 ($19.95 after all the rebates).

But because I was curious, I went ahead and flashed the 3rd party firmware on the Linksys router, just to see if it worked. Bingo! all the ports I needed opened up. And everything worked like it was suppose to. Because I didn't trust the 3rd party firmware, I immediately flashed the firmware with the official Linksys firmware to return it back to normal. Disconnected the router and threw it into the closet.

Hooked up the D-link, set it up in 5 minutes, and everything, including the cam worked perfectly.

Seems like Linksys would know about the firmware problem. Or they do know about it, and don't know what the fix is since it seems to only effect a few cases.

I cheated. Bought a white Westell 2100 and everything works fine.

They do...they choose not to do anything about it. It I'm suprised they wasted that much time on the phone. It must have been a newbie Linksys tech because everyone else knows about it.

There we go. My friend and I have the same routers, mine has a 3ed party software and my friend does not! That narrows the problem down a little more. I think I may be able to get it working too.

Everybody says Linksys is so good.

I had a D-Link that died after 1.5 yrs, so I tried Linksys. Its bad. Went back and get another D-Link. Its only $5 AR, sometimes free.

Does the inability to open up ports with the 6100/Linksys combo affect Bittorrent in any way?

I just bought a Linksys for $50 after rebates, but the Dlink is $20 at Best Buy this week

Get the dd-wrt firmware. It is free and works great. Opens up lots of previously-unavailable options.
