[DSL] Bell: FIX YOUR DAMN THINGS ALREADY

Let's review:

- I HAVE and keep full modem synch all the time. Signal is good.

- Yes, I've shutdown the modem, rebooted the computer, changed the interior wire, and no I don't have a router. It doesn't matter, I get a synch when it gets back, but there's no "service" at the other end to answer and accept the connection. Sometimes it's gone for 3 hours!

- When the service is there but is just acting stupid, with my username@isp.com login, I sometimes get error 691: "Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain". But my password is STORED in my dial'ing program and it uses the SAME to reconnect... and it works perfectly. There's a stupid radius server somewhere replying for others and this SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. It's been 3 years already this problem exists. Find it and FIX IT.

- If playing with the services is a trick to piss me off and convince me to get back with Slowpatico because I dumped your lousy service, or to get to sell me a useless interior wiring coverage thingy I don't even need, well, think again: This trick goes against you and convinces me to get to see Videotron for my phone and cable services.

- And don't go with the lousy excuse that there's no budget to fix that. With all those price increases for all your lousy services and the price you're asking from 3rd party DSL providers, there's plenty of money. Find someone who has a brain and can calculate 2+2. And stop wasting your money in huge banners in the metro, or worse, a whole metro train, makes me wanna puke and take the next train, shame.

Now go fix your damn things.

Let's review:

Sync problems = Bell

Login problems = ISP

Bell never goes with excuses about not being able to fix things.

So, you are saying that the service that keeps disappearing, like "bas1-montreal02" in my case, is handled by the ISP?! Please explain this to me.

Actually untrue...

We had an issue like this previously with Bell even though we were on a diff ISP...

Problems went like this,

1) Card in Bell DSLAM failed. This card also served 12 other people in the town, whoever they may be. When this card went down the people who were served by it lost sync totally. Unfortunatly the alarm on the DSLAM never alerted anyone since the light was inside the case and the signal from the unit never reached the head office untill 48 hours later. Resulted in us having to actually knock on the door of the CO and get them to open the case and look at the card. At this point the tech went "Oh whoops" and changed the card.

2) Although we had our Sync restored to us and everything should have been hunkydory we started having problems similar to the ones InMontreal was having. Authentications would either not happen, or we would get booted every few minutes, sometimes for a minute, an hour, a day. Speed was completely all over the place and nothing was reliable. Tried the usernames for 4 ISPs on the same connection and they all had the same problems. This connection is about a block away from the CO and used to transfer with INCREDIBLE speed. So it wasn't a line condition issue. The problem went back to the card in the DSLAM not working properly. Now imagin trying to explain this to the tech support of your ISP... "Uhh yeah it's the card in the DSLAM... We know this cuz we saw the unit in the CO... Don't ask... What do ya mean you don't know what a DSLAM is?" (At least that's what VIF tech support was like)

MOST of the times yeah the authentication is handled by your ISP however there are some very small exceptions such as something crazy like this that can cause similar problems.

ISP may own Radius, but they do not own BAS which routes PPPoE traffic.

So, lawrence171 just said something out of the blue. Thanks for confirming that.

See, when I quit Slowpatico in june 2002, I went with AEI. I did configured Win2k to auto-reconnect using RASPPPOE and the dialer. Whenever the BAS was down, or AEI's radius server was down, the software kept trying. Then a few minutes later, it was giving me the error 691 described above. Windows erases the password and keeps reconnecting with a blank password. Is my ISP's RADIUS server online? I don't know. I shouldn't get that error message. I'm still having this problem now I'm with VIF.

Who is stupid in this situation? The user? Windows? Bell's equipments? the ISP's authentification servers?

You said your problem just started? I'm with VIF as well and for about the last 4 days authentication has been acting really wonky... Either not going through for random times, or just getting booted all the time. Sync is never an issue. Always stays stable with good signal...

Hmm might be on to something

me and a friend living a few km away from me are both using vif and getting slow speeds and some disconnects.

i'm about to switch isps in september because i can't have it be slow or disconnect when i have to work online... might switch to videotron because it seems my line is crap since i'm on the 1.5 profile... really not sure if i should get a new line in since i'm pretty close from the central and qualify for 4mbit or switch to videotron Extreme high speed...

( this isn't as bad as last fall when they introduced the speed increase and for about 2-3 weeks it was REALLY REALLY SLOW )

That's the problem I had since friday night, and VIF knows about it: »service.vif.com/netstat.php?lang=en .

Still doesn't solve Bell's problem, replying with bad password. I don't have the tools to pinpoint which server has the decency of replying for others, it just shouldn't happen. I assume Slowpatico's since their users aren't required to add @slowpatico bit in their login... Anyways.

Was fun with VIF. Been disconnected at 12:07am and couldn't reconnect until 2:52am. Since I reset my modem at around 12:10am, the statistics shows "CRC Count: 15" and "ATM HEC Count: 3". The CRC Count was passed 350 before the reset.

VIF's netstat page says than an update has been applied and the week-end problems should be fixed now. I hope so.

During the downtime, I was getting half replies as error 718 (timed out waiting for a valid response) and 691 (bad username/password). Not normal.
