Re: Article

I have heard that it is a way to force businesses to pay a hefty price for their symmetric services, IE a T-1. Who would pay for a T-1 line if you could get a 5/5 Meg cable line? Actually, that is a can of worms Verizon is opening with their FIOS...

a T-1 is dedicated bandwidth. FIOS is not along with cable or dsl

T-1 is designed for business. Say your T-1 goes out you get a credit on your account no questions ask(no csr you need). If your line does go out its only out for like a few mins. at the most i have ever heard of. I know of a few people with T-1 lines they love them. When they say 1.5 megs you get 1.5 where cable would be a posted 5 megs you would really get 3.5 depends on your node load and head end load. I dont care of the telco's but this is one strong line that they do have. Soon T-3 and t-5 will come down in price now since fois is now in the market.

Cable companies are like they dont care, if you are a business or a house we will get to you when we want.

Re: Article

t 5 ?

Did I miss a new level of service there ? I though oc are the next step up from a t-3 / ds-3.

Btw T1 prices are only 250 a month now and falling fast. t1 with an sla can be had for $250 but if you turn down the sla they can go as cheap as $99.

Links backing this up? Maybe for the line charges but not for both line and data.

Call sbc or qwest. at this point they are quoting well below 250 if you are even remotely close to any co with a decent pop.

»www.t1market.com/ is the fastest look up service i know of but any call to the csr's in their respective business divisions and you will get a decent quote in 10 min max.

You obviously havent been T1 shopping recently.

Tariff price on a loop is somewhere around 250 in the state of Texas. Add data charges to this, you easily get to 500. SBC quoted me just the other day at 545 plus tax.

It doesnt matter if you are close to a CO, within a POP, or anything like that. The monthly cost of a dedicated hi-cap line is pretty much the same across the board. There isnt much of a change between prices.

Its the installation costs that will get you. If you live in the boonies, you can get a T-1 provided the equipment is installed and they have a backhaul to a POP. Most do. Digging up and laying down a loop might cost you a small fortune though.

I have never seen them on provider charts at all. But I will try and find their country of origin they may be equivalent of ds links in europe.

Service/Line Rate(Mbps) Voice channels
DS1 T1 1.544 24
DS2 T2 6.312 96
DS3 T3 44.732 672
DS4 T4 274.176 4032

Those are all I have access to from every isp in north america. Oc links are pure optical so they don't show as an option for t's.

I would imagine a t5 would just be another wave of tdm but I have honestly never seen them even on some of the major phone links here.

Ironically Europe offers E-1 to E-4 in same structure just not same throughput and capacity as us t's.

Got it. It's just that I've been doing telecom and data for 23 years and would hate to find out I missed something along the way. And yes, a lot of countries outside the US use E circuits. A lot of fun when converting between the standards.

Thanx for the info .

sorry of me being out on this work called me out.

For a t-5 it is 4500/ 4500 going back up.
For a t-8 it is 7500/7500 going back up.
These two have been out since 2001.
(I believe im right on the t-8 specs but no one uses them).

Most cable head end uses between 10 to 50 T-1 lines at once. Its not profitable using t-3 lines too much money.

I'm getting quoted $650 for a T-1 and $2250 for a T-3, plus loop.

That's more than 50 T-1's??

The loop is additional, based on distance.

Thats weird Today i installed 2 t-1 to a tower in central mass and a t-3 to western mass tower and the quotes and prices we got were much lower then that. t3 to a mountain tower was 2750 with local loop. and the t's as back up were 275

I cant find anymore info on it anymore for some reason. I do remember it on my MCSC certification when i finshed it. I think they have changed the name on them To go with the europe side to be equal on both sides of the pond.

This is a old link but they just past over it (look near the bottom)

I will copy and paste if you feel like looking at the bottom..

Quote from the page (These are 4 of the most common (and affordable) methods to connect to the Internet for the Home and SOHO user. There are other, faster, ways to connect, but with speed comes a price. T-1, T-3 and T-5 connections are simply out of reach, presently, for home and SOHO users, so there is little point in going into details on these.)

While that's true, its vitually never worth the hassle to try and collect SLA credits. We have a NextWeb wireless service that's supposed to be a "T1 replacement" with 99.999 SLA, but it's worse than any DSL or cable connection I've ever used. It's simply not worth the time to try and collect some fractional credit because it goes down for a few minutes per day.

The very fact that T1 is limited to 1.5mbps is why the telcos are still so skiddish about giving us more bandwidth. The truth is DSL *is* pretty darn reliable, and if DSL had 2mbps+ of upload speed (or heck, the 896kbps that our existing technology can go up to), T1 sales probably *would* fall sharply. LOTS of businesses don't NEED mission-critical reliability, but 256/384kbps of upload speed does not cut it for their day to day operations.

quote:
When they say 1.5 megs you get 1.5 where cable would be a posted 5 megs you would really get 3.5 depends on your node load and head end load.
Of course, the telcos have been bragging about DSL's "dedicated bandwidth" as a feature over cable from the get-go. I would rather have 5mbps of speed that sometimes goes 3.5 along with another cheap backup circuit, than be stuck with 1.5.

T1 1.5/1.5 is a dinosaur. The $500+ that businesses spend per month should be buying MUCH more speed than that these days.

For a lot of businesses T-1 is all about the SLA not the speed.

But you can get an almost-comparable SLA with SDSL as you can with a T1, which often provides twice the bandwidth for the same cost.

Fios is not a symmetric architecture. The PON system that Verizon is building provides 622Mbps downstream and 155 Mbps (I think those are the numbers, someone correct if I'm a bit off) upstream per line card in the CO.
Fios is also not designed for businesses. IIRC, not even the $200 30/5 package comes with an SLA.
