Is there any update to UTOPIA in utah?

I went to their website and it seems outdated by a year. Did it go through and have any cities actually starting using it in Utah. Any info would be great. Thanks

Try »utopianet.org/metronet/ and »www.mstarmetro.com The network is active in some parts of Orem. Not much else.

interesting. I might be moving back to Utah within 2 years so hopefully by then a few cities will be up and running. I will only buy a house in a area served by UTOPIA. Can not wait

I live in Murray and each time I call they say it's about a month away. They've done all the digging that needed to be done already, about 6 months ago.

Latest news when I called was that it was up in some areas of Murray, but not mine yet. Still hoping...

Xmission is offering service through Utopia now. I called them and I cannot get it in Murray as of yet. I am just below 9th east. Prices are 45 a month for 10 meg up/down with a 100 gig limit a month.

You might want to check out xmissions web page on it. Go to www.xmission.com, click Personal at the top, then click the link labeled "UTOPIA Fiber Optic Network"

Gives you all pricing information and where to sign up .

Eklarsen I was wondering how your speeds have been with Metronet could you post a speed test?

Is metronet the same as xmission or two different companies offering fiber? And man 15 up and down for 44 bucks! lmao thatis just sick. I pay 44 for 4 down and 356 up! Cant wait to move back to Utah. It is a main reason I want to move back, and the cities that have fiber will be where I will purchase a home.

UTOPIA is a consortium of cities that has partially guaranteed the loans that finance the build out of the FTTH infrastructure to every home and business within those city limits.

"MetroNet" is the name of that infrastructure. It is an open network upon which private companies like XMission can offer service (voice, video, internet data, etc).

Its best explained by the airport model. An airport is financed and built by a city/state, and then opened to private airline companies to provide service. MetroNet is the "airport" itself. XMission and other service providers are the "airlines".

I am up and running as of a week ago. Getting about 14 mb/sec download and the same upload. I live in Murray below 900 East on 600 East. Loving it so far.

Great to hear that feedback, gbranscombe. Thanks for posting.

We expect our UTOPIA network to do nothing but improve in the future. Its an exciting product we're very pleased to offer.

I am up running 12 mb/sec up and down at my house, all of my area has utopia run and they won their case with qwest so they can roll out as fast as possible. I am also bringing into our new office in Murray which will have 30 mb/sec up and down. Let me know if you have any questions.

The only problem that I have had is that it does not work well with a linksys router. Keep on getting disconnects. Not good when you have voip. I bought a netgear router seems to have solved the problem but seems a little slower. Any clues why it would be slower with a netgear router?

reply to MSauk
Yep. Some of the Netgear simply can't handle 15 Mbps. They just weren't designed for that volume of traffic. We're trying to consolidate a list of routers that are confirmed as working at these speeds, but its slow going.

The whole Linksys thing has been a massive pain. Linksys routers are excellent, but we have come across an inexplicable bug where Linksys routers on the network are stealing each other's IPs. We've verified that they're mistakenly answering DHCP requests (seems every Linksys thinks they are the only Linksys on a network and just grab whatever IP is being thrown out with a Linksys MAC ID attached), but this doesn't explain how statically assigned IPs are making it to other Linksys using DHCP. Its been an unexpected problem across the entire UTOPIA network (meaning this isn't just an XMission problem, every UTOPIA provider is having it), and one we're actively trying to solve.

Incidentally, if anyone else here has run into this problem on another FTTH network and has a solution, I'm all ears. Even the Linksys (Cisco) engineers we've shown this to are stumped.
