Connection problems

I recently purchased a brand new pc. I brought it home and hooked it into the ethernet port on the back of my cable modem. All went well until I restarted the pc. Since I did that I have not been able to connect to the internet whatsoever.

I have tried many solutions and I am about to pull the hair out of my head. I tried visiting sas.r31.insightbb.com as well as »https://12.223.2.9 and 8 to add the pc to my account, but I keep getting a page cannot be displayed message.

I have the drivers enabled and I am apparently connected at 10mps but I still cannot get on the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Insight connection has seemed to be out the last few days. Weather? It's frustrating.

I don't suppose you have something else you can plug into the ethernet, or does your modem show whether or not it's connected?

When I connect the cable I get a message on my pc that it is connected to the LAN.
What is also weird was that I can ping an IP address via command prompt, i just cant connect to a webpage or internet whatsoever.

you need to set up proxies, sas.r31.insightbb.com port 8000, bypass *.r31.insightbb.com, there ya go
once finished, remove proxies.

(I know this 'cuz I'm a contractor)

Ok, exactly how do I set that up. When I try to go to sas.r31.insightbb.com, I get a page cannot be displayed error.

If I need to set it up another way, please inform me, because Im not very informed about this.

alright, bear w/ me this could be lengthy.

1st, we need to establish that you are recieving an IP address from your cable modem. click start, then control panel, then network connections, then right click on your Local Area connection (your ethernet card). Click status, click the support tab. Here you will see your IP address.

If your ip address starts w/ 192.xxx.xxx.xxx then your modem doesn't have an ip (its a cable problem).

If your IP add. = 10.xxx.xxx.xxx then your modem and card are working properly but you need to register your new computer through sas.

If your IP starts w/ 12.xxx.xxx.xxx then you are registered properly and something is up w/ the pc.

Here's what to do in these scenario's.

scenario 1 (192xxxxx) call insight.
scenario 2 (10.xxx.xxx.xxx)
go to »https://sas.r31.insightbb.com and follow along
if it doesn't work once you've followed through the process
then you may need to reset your modem, once the modem is back online then renew your ip on the computer (or restart it, your choice).
If that fails then do this:
open internet explorer
click 'tools'
click 'internet options'
click 'connections' tab
click 'lan settings'
make sure both boxes in the top section are NOT checked
check both bottom boxes
enter sas.r31.insightbb.com as the address
enter port 8000
click advanced
in the bottom box ("do not use proxy yadayayadayda") enter:
*.r31.insightbb.com
click ok, ok etc
typed »https://sas.r31.insightbb.com in the address bar hit enter
follow through the promts etc (replace, etc)
go back and remove everything that I just had you enter.
renew ip (or restart computer)
should be good now

In the third scenario (12.xxx.xxx.xxx)
somethings weird w/ the pc.
you say from the command line you can ping and address?
can you ping only number addresses (such as 128.210.10.11), or can you ping www.yahoo.com.
If you can only ping numbers, then there is something keeping you from getting to the dns server, search for solutions to that online.
if you can ping www.yahoo.com, then your computer is able to get online, but something is stopping your windows based stuff from getting online.
Can you check email etc?

here are some things you can try, one at a time, in this order, check to see if your internet works after each one:
-------------------------------
Make sure you dont have anything checked in the internet explorer connections setup (from above scenario).
----------------------
try opening your 'network connections', right click on 'local area connection' and disable it, then enable it.
-------------------------------
make sure your 'security' settings are at the default levels in the internet settings.
-----------------------
try downloading and running ad aware se
----------------------
try going to the command line and typing
netsh winsock reset catalog
then restart the computer
---------------------------
try uninstalling and reinstalling your ethernet card adapter driver.
----------------------

good luck

you are using windows xp w/ service pack2?
xp w/ service pack 2 is the only one that responds to that command. I assumed you had sp2 when you said 'new computer'.

A quick fix would be to hook your cable modem up to the computer w/ your usb cord and run the driver disc for the modem.

I'll get back to you in a minute w/ the process for repairing the winsock w/ out service pack 2.

go to run
type regedit
hit file,, export,, save as c:\regbackup (you don't have to do this, but it'll give you a way to go back if you accidentally mess something up in here)

find and delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\winsock2

then close this out.

control panel/network connections....right click on local area connections
click properties
click install
click protocol
click tcp/ip
etc etc.
reboot
try again

((if tcp/ip wasnt an option,, click have disk,, point it to c:\windows\inf\ , then click microsoft, then tcp/ip))

All you need to do is register the MAC address of your new PC with Insight. Give them a call at 800-247-5812 and ask them reconise you're new pc.

even without the MAC registered, assuming he has signal he should still pull a valid address from insight so that he can get to the sas system.
