1 edit | [ATT CV] DNS authentication issues with my ISP
I recently purchased ATT CV service and was provided with a Centillium TA. I use Speakeasy.net for my DSL service and they have been rock solid. I have a static IP address with them.
When activating my TA the ATT CV service could not activate and authenticate via my normal Speakeasy DNS server. I spent about 3 hours on the phone with ATT CV tech support and they finally escalated my case to a much higher level. I received a call back the next day and the very knowledgeable tech told me to change my DNS server from my Speakeasy assigned one and use 4.2.2.2 instead as my DNS server address. Once I made that change everything on the TA worked instantly and flawlessly. If however I switch back to my ISP assigned DNS address the ATT CV service will not work.
So my question is this: Should I just keep using the 4.2.2.2 DNS address forever? Will my ISP Speakeasy get upset about this? I also want to report the issue to my ISP as in theory this should not happen but I cant get ATT CV to tell which IP address the Speakeasy DNS server could not resolve. The 4.2.2.2 address appears to be owned by Level 3. Will they be unhappy that Im using that address for all of my internet needs?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this topic. |

| You can keep using 4.2.2.2 without any problems from Speakeasy. That DNS server is a top level server for Level3 networks.
But, I would still call Speakeasy and have them look into it. Could be that it will effect others also. I know when I had them they were easy to deal with and had no problems with me calling to get issues resolved. -- FWD#: 223611 |

I spoke with Speakeasy and they really would like to fix it if there is an issue on thier end but now I can't get anyone at ATT CV to tell me what address my TA authenticates to so that Speakeasy can investigate. Anyone have a clue how to find this out? |

| You might try IM'ing SuperNet33 and see if he knows. He is in pretty close with AT&T from what I can tell. -- FWD#: 223611 |

That's part of the problem. I have pleaded with ATT CV for the hostname and I can't seem to get them to give it to me. |

| said by artisticcheese :Can you do sniff on network or look at firewall logs? I'm not sure how to do a sniff If it requires more hardware I don't have it. I have gone through all of the firewall logs for my Netgear Router (I have the Centillium behind it). The only logs my router seems to keep are for web sites browsed and not all IP address traffic. If only ATT CV could answer a simple question but it does not seem to be part of the script for level 1 & 2 techs. I should have asked the level 3 tech when he told me to try DNS 4.2.2.2 but I was so happy it was working at the time I forgot about it. |

| reply to dconklin Keep using the server that you are if they recommend it. And you should report it to your ISP as well. If they do not know there is a problem, then they will never get it fixed. -- TALKABOUTVOIP.COM VOIP Professional Help |

| reply to dconklin You can find the CallVantage server information by logging into the Centillium TA using 'root' as the username and password (instead of 'user'). That opens up the administrative function areas of the web interface. If I remember correctly, the call server info is on a page labeled 'SIP'. But if not, keep opening pages, and you'll find it eventually. -- »www.voipboards.net |

I can log in as user with no problem and I loged in as root when trouble shooting the Centilluim a few days ago with ATT CV but now the user name root and password: password no longer seem to work. Did ATTCV change the password for root on my TA or am I typing in something incorrectly? |

| It's possible that they changed the password for the Centillium. That would likely have happened with a firmware upgrade, but I haven't heard that the new firmware was actually pushed to users yet. If someone could confirm that the firmware has been updated, it would be news. Could you log in to your TA and check the firmware versions? That info should still be visible with the user/user login. -- »www.voipboards.net |
