| My phone works....
My POTS line works great!! I have never had any problems with my phone ever. It always works when I pick it up, and guess what...when I dial 911 they know exactly where I am calling from. (Yes I know that E911 is coming to the VOIP world)
VOIP IMO relies on too many independent factors to be super reliable. I'm sure that SR is trying to restore service but who knows if the problem is anything in their control??
POTS works for me because I don't make 5 bazillion minutes of long distance calls each month, though I call who I want when I want. My bill averages around $28/month including all the stupid taxes, and I have Caller ID and Voicemail and a few other little features that I never use.
After my rambling though, I hope you guys that do have SR get your phones back soon. This long outage seems a bit crazy if you ask me. |

Quick question...Why would they have to take the whole system down so no one has phone service to upgrade a VM server?? |

Good to hear that you are only paying $28 for all your phone calls. If I was only paying $28 for land line, all inclusive, I'd still be on utility service lines. (Even though I have been "had" with Packet8's new fee, I'm still paying less, and to their credit, I've never had an outage when I used the phone.)
But, any phone call 8 miles from my Central Office is metered at 5 cents a minute. That's not exactly long distance. I got tired of $100+ phone bills from only intraLATA calling. It's not entirely SBC's fault they kept Ameritech's (and Illinois Bell's) outrageous phone fees and price structure.

3 edits | reply to mykey2k Hey, I hear ya! If my bill was $100+ per month I would be looking for other options as well. I must say that most of the LECs out there offer unlimited local and long distance with all the features you could possibly want for like $45-50 bucks per month (less the wonderful taxes mind you). So that is a far cry from $100 bucks a month.
Having said that, I have no problems with anyone that chooses VOIP for there phone service. Being that there are none of those pesky taxes on VOIP (yet!!), and the VOIP providers basically own and maintain a very tiny portion of the network that ultimately carries the calls, VOIP is cheaper for many many people.
My only point was that like it or not, in most cases POTS is far more reliable and of better quality than VOIP. There is no question that VOIP is getting better all the time. However, the very nature of VOIP makes it vulnerable to many points of failure and users of VOIP have to expect that there ARE going to be failures. I'm sure that SR and all the other VOIP providers would like for there never to be failures and when they happen, to correct them quickly. Unfortunately since the VOIP carriers have very little to do with the network as a whole sometimes it takes some time to figure out what the problem actually is.
Carry on all you VOIP users out there and lets hope the SR network gets back up soon...
Gotta go....My damb POTS phone is ringing!!

| reply to mykey2k Try living in the DFW metroplex. We have to have a metro line and pay a little over $100/mo. every month for phone and DSL.
Granted, I can call all the way to the other side of Ft. Worth and it is still a local call. And I'm on the Northeast side of Dallas.
Though, I'll give up my POTS line when you pry it from my cold dead hands. But, then again, my father has worked for a phone company since before divestiture and my wife and I both work for competing companies (yes, a three competing telco household) and have since 2000.
And just so you know... There is no smoke filled room that we are all filed into on the first day of work brainwashing us so that we must screw our customers out of every dollar we can. No evil conspiracies here. -- Note : The statements made by myself are my own and not the opinions of my employer or of my coworkers. 15.81 GHz Crunching Power | The Ryan Foundation for MPS Children |

I pay around $110/month for cable television and a cable modem (can't get DSL)and I have no premium channels. I think that is pretty high but what ya gonna do?!?!

BTW...I didn't know people lived in the DFW Metroplex |

| reply to mykey2k Umm, you can get unlimited calling within the United States with SBC for about $40. ALL DISTANCE® SELECT
I have this and my phone calls don't cut into my bandwidth.
