I've been using Packet 8 since April and except from the occasional outages from Packet 8 I have had no problems with VOIP. It has saved me half of what I was paying Cincinnati Bell and I now have unlimited long distance calling for $23 a month verses almost 50 a month for just local calling no long distance.

I've been with Vonage for about 4 months. No problems as long as there's no intensive use of the network during calls.

I've used Broadvox Direct on Insight since around 2/24/2004. The service has worked well on Insight. I'm an Insightbb Plus customer. So my bandwidth is 6000/512. As long as I'm not doing a large amount of uploading. My phone service is extremely stable. Rarely if ever do I have issues with anyone not being able to understand me or vice versa. For the features and cost savings. I'm more than happy to have made the switch.

Keep in mind Insight will be releasing their own VOIP service sometime - supposedly in the near future.

I believe everyone will go to voip within a year even telcos..... Just wondering my insightbb speeds have been wavering badly..... How's your voip working for you during slow periods?

Most telco have been using VOIP on the backend of things for some time now. Or at least this is how I understand things. I honestly don't see the old way of doing phone calls going bye bye to quickly. But I do feel the industry is in the process of seeing some changes.

I very rarely if ever have speed related issues. But quality for phone is almost always 100%. Keep in mind that the Insight service would run on separate bandwidth and offer a battery backup. Although you'd have to use their chosen modem. These are a few things to consider when looking at VOIP. 911 is still an issue for many VOIP users. In some communities this isn't to big of a deal. If your dispatch for emergency services are all in one building.

Why Vonage? Honestly there are alternatives out there that are just as good for less money. With that said - if I was going to jump into VOIP right now. I might wait to see what Insight is going to offer. It's really sort of sad how marketing wins out in these cases. Very similar to the whole Apple iPod thing.

That said. I use a Motorola SB5100. Keep in mind that with Vonage you'll be getting a Linksys router that will enable your phone service. Other services use other adapters.

I did some small research on different forums.... It was all based on call quality..... plus I got two months free.... I was really considering either Packet 8 and Att Callvantage.....
The free router will fit exactly with my setup ....

A little bird told me that insight will be launching Insight Phone in the Bloomington market (Bloomington, Martinville, Franklin, Greenwood, Bedford, Linton, Whiteland, and Bargersville.) by October 2005

We use Vonage. No issues at all. $14.99 a month for 500 minutes and if you go over it is 3 cents per minute. Way cheaper than Insight phone service + Long distance provider. We have family that also has Vonage. Calls to another Vonage user is free.

I've been using Broadvox Direct since December 2004.

It's more or less fine. I actually frequently have problems, but those are usually tied into problems with the general Internet I've been getting from Insight (slows down sometimes, and during those periods others have trouble hearing me on the phone - could last a few days).

I wouldn't let it deter you from getting a VOIP service. I think my Insight problems are just local to my building.

YOu can enable 911. When you do this it calls Vonage then Vonage calls 911 for your home address. Not too efficient. They are planning on rolling out 911 direct very soon.
