Re: whitelist?

Just a minor correction, that's a blacklist. A whitelist is a list that you want to receive from.

Have you looked into one of the many freely-available blacklists (or programs that use them)? This would be easier than maintaining a blacklist yourself.

No, it would be a whitelist. Block all of comcast's IP space. Then whitelist their corporate email servers so that still gets through.

When I get to understand my DNS program, I will maintain my own blacklist, and whitelist. And a list which only allows connections from specified MTAs would, in fact, be a whitelist.

We use the CBL. I rsync it every hour and update the mail cluster. I'd love to use the spamhaus sbl-xbl but $11,000 is way too much for a year of access to it (ISP with 100,000 - 500,000 email accounts).

sbl-xbl is just a composite list ....

Just configure your mail system to query the same sources
that sbl-xbl is derived from and you have the same data
and doesn't cost anything.

Have a list? I know the SBL is the CBL and already use that.

Ok, things are getting confused here in this thread, lets try and clear it all up.

The xbl.spamhaus.org zone is the CBL. Trojaned/compromised machines list.

The sbl.spamhaus.org zone is the 'known spammers/rosko' list.

The sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org zone is the combination of the two above.

And yes, at your size you will have to pay, as you said. Even to use just the SBL. And yes, it is 11 grand.

You can hit CBL direct and get the trojaned machine list for free. But unless I am totally wrong, the sbl.spamhaus.org zone is not from another source, it is made and operated by Spamhaus.

And I am pretty sure of that, since I know some of the folks that work for Spamhaus, and I feed them spam on Rosko spammers

I think that is what everyone is saying, but it sure doesn't read like that
