Opera, IE, & Mozilla go up, Firefox goes down!

Wow I'm shocked. Look under July and compare it to other months. Opera, IE, and Mozilla went up! And Firefox went down! I'm shocked, it was completely the opposite for the longest time. I'm shocked the most that IE went up. I wonder whats going on? Opera had a nice little increase itself too.

2005 IE 6 IE 5 O 7 Ffox Moz O 8 NN 7
July 65.6% 8.3% 0.7% 19.6% 3.4% 1.2% 0.6%
June 65.0% 6.8% 0.5% 20.7% 2.9% 0.7% 0.6%
Nevertheless, Mozilla Firefox still beats Opera in the statistics. 20.7% to 19.6% is not that bad compared to 1.2% score of Opera

Because it gets the job done, is fairly customizable, and is completely free and not adware?

On the topic, I don't see any real value to these statistics. There is no way anywhere near 20 % of the browsers out there are Firefoxes. I'm sure they're accurate for that one site, but why should anyone care, I wonder?

Does is still matter if you are on a 10MB pipe? I think this just all for personal preferences. Opera and Mozilla are both good browsers with Pros and Cons.. it is just a matter of choice.

The biggest reason that Firefox was gaining popularity so quickly was because of the the amazing ability of Firefox fanboys to spread all these rumours about Firefox's security. Now every random joe that downloads Firefox thinks he can go to a porn site to download a 117KB pornvideosHERE.exe file and get a video rather than a virus. Unbelievable? I've seen so many of these guys around on various message boards. It's crazy.

That site is way off from real stats, Way off!
Pretty worthless inaccurate info.
Firefox at 20%! Pretty funny, more like 5% in the real world.

Really? Then please provide us with a current reputable link which substantiates your "5% in the real world" claim.

Probably around 10% now if the growth rate is the same.

Well, whatever, it's definitely not 20%.

Yes, 5% is way to low and is probably somewhat upsetting to the Firefox fanboys. It's actually a whopping 6% in the real world!

Interesting. And I can do a search and find market shares that come close to the 6% figure, others coming in around 10%, and others close to 20%. The question remains, which studies are accurate, why are these estimates so varied, and what is the real figure? There can only be one, after all.
EDIT: typo

NetApplications, a leader in Web-based applications that measure, monitor and market Web sites for the Small to Medium Enterprise (SME), today announced through its monthly Web site traffic analysis that Firefox continues to sway users away from Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

FireFox reached 8% during the month of May up from 7.38 % in April. FireFox's gain is Microsoft's loss whose base dipped to 87.23% in May down .77% from April of 2005. Safari also gained a modest tenth of a percentage posting 1.91% in May 2005. Most other browsers experienced little change during the same time period.

"While 87-percent market share may seem like market dominance, the numbers are revealing an average of .5 to 1% loss of users each month," noted Dan Shapero, Chief Operating Officer of NetApplications. "FireFox is gaining traction with early adopters and its popularity and adoption rate are starting to tap into mass-market acceptance as buzz continues to build."

May 2005 Browser/Market Share:
Microsoft Internet Explorer - 87.23%
FireFox - 8.06%
Netscape - 1.64%
Safari - 1.91%
Mozilla - 0.58%
Opera - 0.51%
Other - 0.07%

20% market share for FF even I won't beleive. I found another source thats seems a little more close to the truth. 6-10% I'll believe not more, which leaves Opera with less then 1%.

Then again there are those that believe whatever source you look at will over estimate Firefox numbers due to the link prefetching gimmick that comes enabled by default in Firefox.

»news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39204643,00.htm

quote:
The chief executive of Opera Software claimed on Monday that the market share figures for Mozilla Firefox are inflated, due to its support for link prefetching.

Link prefetching is a mechanism that uses browser idle time to download Web pages that the user might visit in the near future. This feature is enabled by default in Firefox 1.0. Google added support for link prefetching to its search engine earlier this year, which means that Firefox will pre-load the top search results into its cache.
EDIT: BTW, isn't this the same "technology" that is almost universally mocked as a farce when it is advertised in such goofy things as EarthLink Accelerator? »www.earthlink.net/software/free/accelerator/

One variable to colerate with software usage, like web browsers, is PC sales...one could make an argument that if there is a surgence in PC sales, specifically Windows PC, the default web browser, of course, is IE...just adding some food for thought...and I believe that both HP and Dell have seen good PC sales over the last quarter...

ctrip you have to ask yourself "how good could those stats be when unknown gets 1%?". That being said there isn't any stat programs for browsers that is 100%.

Opera would be a better contender if it wasn't ad supported.
Course, Opera doesn't have as much funds as the Mozilla Project and Microsoft have.

They are not estimates, they are web server user-agent tallies over a certain period of time (a month for example), the w3c one being the most off as only geeks visit that site. A more accurate source would be OneStat or WebSideStory that provide tracking and reporting services to a wide range of businesses, but even they are not perfect.

EDIT: The only way we will ever know the true number is if all the sites on the net standardized on one statistics-reporting tool.

EDIT 2: Is it really an issue? I mean shit we are bitching over the market share (if you can call it that) of web browsers
