a real wardriver dosent connect to networks... i unbind tcp/ip from my adapter so it wont even try to request an ip or join the network... i have recorded ~3000 accesspoints here in miami alone and over 80% of them have WEP disabled
while that guy is a douchbag not any idiot that can drive around till his pc gets a wireless network can be called a wardriver... but whatever, thats the ignorance of the media i guess... they need a story that will get people all interested and fired up, and the truth hardly ever does that, so just make it up!
the modern newspaper/news broadcast should be classified as fiction -- BellSouth sucks |

You can underplay it's importance if you like, but that's just being shortsighted.
The problem illustrated in this news article isn't news in the sense that it's timely, since it's been a growing problem since WiFi's popular public adoption. Keep an eye out for more and more stories like this, and then come back and laugh at it.
Business (more than ever) are beginning to use WiFi for all sorts of uses. Almost every major chain store that I've been in has had some reliance on 802.11b/g/a. Be it for inventory management (symbol scanners, e.t.c.), mobile registers, or inventory price checkers (those "what price is it machines" in department stores). You can laugh it all up when that becomes even more of a problem than it was with the Lowe's situation the article briefly makes mention of.
Mark my words, unsecured wireless networks are going to become the preferred way to spam, use P2P, and share other increasingly illicit files in years to come. Why? Because they're free, they're open, and they're largely anonymous. -- "Some people never see the light till it shines thru bullet holes." -Bruce Cockburn

Because they're free, they're open, and they're largely anonymous. That's a very interesting prediction. I could just see spammers loading up big white vans each with a monster server with multiple wireless cards and the proper software to automatically handshake with the APs and send out the massive amount of spam email that they require. The question is, would this cost be more profitable/less hassle than the fee for buying zombienets from the mafia/hacking groups to get the job done? |

Better yet, use that same software to exploit the same vulnerabilities that they would with the botnet through the networks from the inside using their own wireless networks.

| reply to FLECOM lol....I agree with you wholeheartedly. It's like playing counterstrike and because someone cheats everyone calls him a "hacker"........
I agree on the media as well...their formula constitutes sensationalizing everything to get a story.
As for wireless, I have a semi-open access point that requires you to register, then I have to approve it, but once you have an ID, anytime you come by is you can use it, of course you must agree to the AUP. |
