| VMWare; Can't install SuSe or Mandrake
Here's the deal. I installed VMWare Workstation 4.0 on my machine so I could play with different operating systems on the same machine. I received this software about a year and a half ago while I was finishing up a computer science degree. See, in the real world B.S. degrees don't always help you. LOL...
Anyway, I had also had an old copy of Red Hat 8.0 from then. I installed RH 8 and it installs fine on the VMWare 4.0 virtual machine. Runs great. I wanted to try some newer Linux distros. I tried Mandrake 10, but as soon as it gets to where it is installing the files, it errors out and says error installing file and pretty much errors on each file after that.
I also tried Mandriva LE 2005. Same problem. Same thing with SuSe 9.1. Like I said, it seems OK with RedHat 8.0. Maybe I should try downloading RH 9.0 and see if it works. Wondering if the VMWare 4.0 may not be able to handle the NEWER distro's being they were made AFTER VMWare 4.0 (2003)???
If this doesn't work, I have a separate 10gb hard drive in an old machine I might try putting in and installing on it and trying for a dual boot system. I really liked and wanted to use VMWare 4.0 cause I had it and it makes working with different operating systems so simple. I can have XP Pro, Win 2000, RedHat 8, extv... all on my virtual machines and have them all work fine. Just can't get newer Mandrake or SuSe to work. I guess I could also try OLDER versions of Mandrake and SuSe to see if they work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx... Mike..... |

Trumann, AR | I think the older VMwares had problems with the 2.6 kernel. I know vmware 5 works fine with anything I have thrown at it so far.

First suggestion: Don't bother with Redhat Linux 8. The product is unsupported by Redhat. They don't even make Redhat Linux anymore -- so don't bother with RHL 9 either. You might try a flavor of Fedora Core Linux -- which some might say evolved from RHL. That is, if you prefer Redhat type distros.
Second, as the other poster pointed out, VMware 4.x will probably have issues with the 2.6 kernel. You might check with VMware to see if you qualify for a free or reduced cost upgrade. VMware has been given out free copies of their Workstation product at seminars all across the country. And it never hurts to ask.
If it was my system, I'd go with separate hard drives just for physical isolation between to the two operating systems.

| For what it's worth. I found a place and downloaded Mandrake 9.0 and it installed fine. I am leaning towards your suggestion to check with VMWare and see if I can get Workstation 5 for free or at a discount.
The only reason I tried installing RedHat 8 was because I had it on CD already and wanted to see if it would work. If VMWare won't work with me than my only other option is to set up my machine with a 2nd hard drive and set up a dual boot system. I can't totally get rid of Windows XP. At least not yet.
As long as I've got Mandrake 9 loaded I will play around with it. Like trying to install macromedia flash and Java. My brain isn't working to well. Been a long time since I worked from a command line. Once I figure out how to navigate to different directories, I'll install some of these plugins and see if I like browsing the internet in Linux. I normally use Firefox anyway, so it's not that big of a change.
I've been a computer geek since the mid-late 70's when you had to write your own programs and such. Grew up through the whole DOS/Unix/Windows etc... progressions. Other than the internet, I've gotten quite board recently with computers because everything is just plug and play and install the software. I wanted to play with linux for a bit to see if I could spark some renewed interests. I've got 5 machines networked throughout the house, and other than the internet, I don't do much with them anymore. Some office programs and an occassional game. My son likes XM Radio online. Anyway, just trying to renew some excitement in computers.

| FWIW I agree that VMWare Workstation 5 should fix the problems you're seeing. I got a copy at one of the seminars an earlier poster mentioined, and have Fedora Core 4, Ubuntu 5.04, and Mandriva LE 2005 all working perfectly. (although I ran into problems getting any of them to see the network while Kerio Personal Firewall was running on my XP Pro host)
