Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

I ended up getting the following:

Vtech phone 5.8 (no panasonics in stock)

and this Multifunction printer/fax/etc... (we needed the colour capability and couldn't afford a laser)

»www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetai···id=21192

So far the Vtech phone is alright - it has some good features... and we are really quite pleased with the Brother MFC unit.
