Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

I ended up getting the following:

Vtech phone 5.8 (no panasonics in stock)

and this Multifunction printer/fax/etc... (we needed the colour capability and couldn't afford a laser)

»www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetai···id=21192

So far the Vtech phone is alright - it has some good features... and we are really quite pleased with the Brother MFC unit.

We have the same MFC unit in one of the offices, it works great over the network and is a breeze to setup. It will run LAN and USB at the same time.
