| Kanotix is very good
I don't get back here as often as I would like as I'm so busy these days. Just wanted to say that I've been running Kanotix the past week or so and it is blazing fast. It's a Debian clone with bleeding-edge packages (KDE 3.4, O.O. 2.0, etc.) You can test it as a live CD and install if you wish.
I installed it just for fun... to see how the new KDE would run, and to play with the new O.O. But this distro has been totally stable that I'm using it for my everyday work (I installed MySQL, Apache, PHP etc. via apt-get... piece of cake.)
I don't know what "Kano" (creator of Kanotix) did to make this distro so 'tight' but I have to tell you that for a full-featured distro, it just 'snaps.'
Might be worth a look if you're looking for something new.
Disclaimer: I have no relation with Kanotix or anyone associated with it.

| reply to Al1776 As deeply as I feel the need to mortify my flesh, my development installs of debian sarge led me to the simple belief that for commercial debian distros, libranet is the most reliable, but, in fact, for those who can run one or two more scripts, kanotix is the debian for those who want to use their machines to do things.
A stunning achievement.
For those who do not like KDE, one can, after install, apt the complete fluxbox, gnome, ice, or whatever.
Also, although I am hardly an expert, the times I have used the kde 3.4 manager, which I am using right now, it is far more than an incremental improvement over earlier versions. The pim actually works, and one can indeed import address books, old e-mail, &c.
The wireless indicator still cannot be made to show the active card of two via the gui, however.
Plus side, kano has udev working sufficiently to allow audacity to record on a laptop ootb, and includes more firmware than ever. There are so many apt sources, that one can apt-get almost anything, for example the ralink drivers.
For those interested, it is as close to an out of the box support everything free as in beer distro as exists.
As much as I really believe in libranet as a more ideal solution for the genuine newb, kanotix is just as useful, without the configuration hell of gentoo, slack, or debian.
For what it is worth, when everything else fails, I boot into kanotix, and it has not failt me on six or so disparate machines even once.
Mind you, the kernel seems to have been configured by a man with my gift for brevity.

| reply to Al1776 While Kanotix is very 'hot' the one thing I've found that is 'lukewarm' on my machine is the font rendering. Instead of using the Kanotix generated XF86Config-4 I substituted the one I use for Mepis... and it renders fonts a lot better. Maybe some X-Server guru can look at both files and explain why the Mepis one renders so well on my machine while the Kanotix file renders thin, 'fuzzy', and 'broken' fonts a lot of the time. If anyone knows, please enlighten me.

| reply to Al1776 I've been test driving Kanotix a few weeks myself, I have to agree with all of you. I'd been looking for a fast, noob friendly, Debian-based distro for a box I'm setting up for my brother. He's not sure about Linux yet. Just finished it today and I think he's going to very surprised. Now I'm debating if it might replace Yoper on my main box. Thanks for the font tip Al, the old eyes ain't what they used to be... I have not tried useing the mepis version yet,nor has it been really a big problem for me,but i can see why it bothers some. When xorg goes into debian and kanotix things should(hopefully) change for the better as far as font rendering is concerned. I will try the mepis way and see if there is a big noticable difference for me.....not that I see clearly anyway.;) -- "LIVE FREE OR DIE"...»www.rif.org/...Fiber Optics is the future of high-speed internet access.
