| Re: trip with the girlfriend to toronto in august If you're going through the order in Detroit, then you end up in Windsor, London is 2 hrs away from there, Toronto is 4 hrs from Windsor...
In terms of ID, birth certificate or passport would be good, photo ID is a must. -- My name is noelstrom, and I approve this message. www.myspace.com/noelstrom

Yeah, and get a map too. Google suggests it's better to go through Port Huron/Sarnia rather than Detroit/Windsor. In any case, if you come in via the latter, just look for the signs to Hwy 401 and head east to the "Centre of the Universe."
Another route to consider is crossing at Niagara Falls (or Buffalo.) That would add another couple of hours to the total but you may want to show the Falls to your girlfriend.

| Re: trip with the girlfriend to toronto in august Do not take Sarnia. It is a shorter route, but there are no gas stations for a long time. So you'd have to have get your tank full before you enter canada or you're screwed. Because after you enter canada there is nothing but farm for hte longest time. | |

| Re: trip with the girlfriend to toronto in august said by DKS :I beg your pardon. There are many gas stations at the Sarnia interchanges. You can fill up at Port Huron and have enough gas to get to Toronto. Other than on the 401, Canadian highways do not have service centers on the multi-lane highways. Gas is available at the exits. And those are well marked on the 402 out of Sarnia, travelling away from the Bluewater bridge. Hahahaha, not like Sarnia, Strathroy or London are places that sell gas, eh? -- Bigot - Someone that has won an argument with a Liberal. Yes, I CanChat. Can You? www.fiberal.ca | |

1 edit | said by DKS :Another interesting crossing is the Walpole Island ferry. There is also the Marine City/Sombra ferry. Folks from up here use the ferry going south to Florida to bypass th Windsor/Detroit urban area and the mess of Interstates around Detroit. They're still in operation? Wow! I grew up in Wallaceburg in the late '50s and early '60s. We used to go across on those things all the time.
(We also used to swim in and eat the fish we'd catch from the St Clair river long before anyone knew about all the "toxic blobs" accumuating downstream from Sarnia. )

I've taken the Walpole Ferry a few times. Nice ride. Not much to do once you get to Algonac though. -- "It's all coming down!!" - Mike Holmes

| Re: trip with the girlfriend to toronto in august Cool! We moved to Tronno in 1965 when I was in grade 7 or 8.
As for what's to do on the US side, back then there were a lot of fancy restaurants along the waterfront. We'd go there to celebrate.
(Also, long before McDonalds came to Canada, we'd go to the nearest golden arches in Port Huron. It was quite a novelty back then. IIRC burgers and fries were 15¢ each.)

| I took the ferry once. Interesting ride. My wife didn't like it all. But, I must admit, the border crossing was the easiest I've ever been through. Highway 400 has one, and Autoroutes 20 + 40 in Quebec have them They do. 400 has 3 actually... one just by king Sideroad north of Toronto, one just south of Essa road in barrie, and the other is sort of a half service station because you have to exit the highway to get it to it going north but it's at Hwy 88 near that outlet mall.
The 401 also has a bunch east of toronto (perhaps west too i'm not sure). I've noticed they fall approximately every 2 hours starting around belleville.

Yabbut you pay through the nose for the convenience of buying gas and pay with gas (among other symptoms) for eating the food at those service centres. It's usually much cheaper to pull off at an exit at a medium-sized city like Woodstock (or Belleville or Kingston, etc.) Takes an extra five minutes and well worth it.

Well, the food's a lot better and cheaper now than before when the service centres had their own food concessions.
I remember as a kid stopping at these places and eating lousy, overpriced "cafeteria" food.
If I'm driving the 401 I want to get where I'm going as soon as possible. If I wanted to take my time I'd drive Highway 2. -- "It's all coming down!!" - Mike Holmes

| Don't bother with Windsor - in fact, I'd avoid Detroit all together if at all possible. I'd recommend crossing at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, and stopping for an hour or so on the Canadian side of the river for some sight-seeing - don't bother with the American side, it will make you cry. Once you're done in Niagara Falls, ON, it's just a quick drive up Highway 420 to the QEW, which takes you right to Toronto. If you really want to impress your girlfriend, you might want to take a short jog up the Niagara Parkway and tour the Olde Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's considered the most romantic town in North America, and I'm sure she'll reward you for your thoughtfulness -- Bigot - Someone that has won an argument with a Liberal. Yes, I CanChat. | If you have a Canadian birth certificate then you're a Canadian citizen regardless of where you live or whether you have a green card. You'll also need government-issue photo ID (yours or ours.) If you have any doubts about this then call the Canadian consulate in DFW or embassy in DC. | |
