Re: Anyone jump from InsightBB to SBC DSL?

I jumped after seeing the $14.95 deal. I was concerned that my modem was synching at 384k, even after 2 weeks when the "ramp up" of the service was supposed to make it better. I called SBC and the tech support said 384k was all I was going to get for the package setup I had, and passed me off to sales for a better service package and sales told me I was too far from the CO for a better package. I posted my story and data from my modem at the SBC Funhouse forum here, and they directed me to the SBC tech forum here at Broadbandreports, and lo and behold, the techs here had me at 1.5 Mbits in minutes! So yes the SBC call in techs do things to deserve their rep, but the ones that work the forums here know their stuff.

The $14.95 is for only a year, so I'm holding onto my cable modem and router, and hopefully a year from now, Insight will be feeling the pressure and offering something to get back some customers. $44.95 a month for service that I've had for 5 years is just too much . Insight's bottom line needs some stress from people leaving before they get competitive, so if SBC takes enough customers from cable, both Cable and DSL customers will win!

I was an InsightBB subscriber for over 4 years. Have been with SBC DSL for over 18 months. I personally prefer the DSL connection. My 6016/608 package tests in the 4900/500 range, and has been very stable. No problems running server based stuff when/if I want to.

I would go the $24.95 pro package if I was signing up today. Not planning on switching from the 6 MB package since it is grand-fathered and does not require a re-up of the contract.

My advise is to use the techs over in the SBC forum as opposed to calling the SBC support number. They know their stuff.

@rr.com

I moved to Columbus OH form Texas few months back & have had Insight for Cable & Internet since then. I was on a promo for 6 months where internet was 34.95 pm. Now, when I got my bill this week, they were going to charge me 54.95 from this month for internet! When I called, they said they would reduce it to 44.95pm, still 30 more than DSL. And, new customners are getting 30 pm for internet.

I know theoretically cable has high speeds but Insight has oversold bandwidth in my neighborhood & was slow. So, the basic gripes I had with Insight were

1 SLOW: Not upto the advertized speeds. I barely got 1.5 on a 3MB line.

2 BT: Capping of BT downloads. For whatever reason, if I had a download running, after few minutes internet wouldn't work It would stop & IP address would expire. I would have had to unplug the modem & plug back to get the IP lease to renew. Thius happened ONLY when I had BT running.

and finally,

3 EXPENSIVE: They wanted to charge me 54.95 for internet & wouldn't reduce the price beyond 44.95, even though new customers get it for 30pm for 1 year. SBC charges 14.95.

So, why would I stick with Insight? I have had better services & cheaper optuions when I was in Texas with Time Warner & Comcast.

I cancelled my HSI yesterday & switched to DSL.

54.95???? Insight's service has never been above 44.95

@rr.com

Well, In have my bill to prove it. Maybe it was a honest mistake, or maybe they wanted to jack me. Whatever the case, they could have had me continue on my 34.95 plan or switch me to 30 plan new customers get. I would have accepted if they continued my existing plan, which was $5 more than new customers get.

The nice lady ovet the phone just wouldn't budge beyond 44.95. Now, thats 30 more than SBC, a whopping $360 saving in a year. For me, its a big amount, speeds be damned. In any case, Insight had maxed out bandwidth in my area. (I was lucky if I got 1-1.5 MBPS)

I just want to clarify something on the new pricing that was clarified to me by a sales rep. I think we all know the first part, the $30 deal is only for one year. What I wasn't aware of, and what many of us may not know is that after that year it goes to the normal $44.95. You won't get the $10 discount that we all get now for having digital service. I guess we really have it good now. I'd rather pay my $34.95 forever then pay $30 for a year and then have it go to $44.95. That's what I was told when I called.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But before the discount for cable services or if your not using Insight for you TV. Then your bill very well could be that rate for the normal tier Insightbb service.

It's $44.95 stand alone with no TV.

With these latest pushes by DSL providers lowering their prices, I'm waiting for Insight to offer some discounts, at least to the faithful subscribers.

But, I won't hold my breath!

I am very happy with the InsightBB service and speeds, they seem to rival the T1 speeds I have at work...at least for the downloads.

I would be tempted to try SBC DSL if they would give a trial period, but I am too far from the CO to get the high speeds...:(

Well, I hate contracts.

And it's not $30 cheaper if you don't have a phone line.

Last time I checked, SBC offered a relatively cheap line ($12/mo + taxes) if all I wanted was DSL. Say $15/mo + $15/mo = $30/mo (including taxes). Only $15 cheaper than Insight, and a third of the speed.

All this notwithstanding, I may try it. I had the same DSL deal for a whole year (was more expensive then), and while its considerably slower, it was rock solid. I've now had Insight BB for almost a year, and its reliability pales in comparison. No down times, technically, but sometimes it gets slow and stays that way for a day or two. Then their fluctuations in ping times cause me woes with my VoIP service. I recently visited my brother who uses SBC DSL, and took my VoIP adapter there. I could CLEARLY tell the difference in quality.

I hate contracts. However, I'm a poor student. I'm using Insight only because I have a roommate and he insists on the higher speeds. But he may leave town after a few months, and I may be stuck alone to pay the full rent, bills, etc. If that happens, I probably won't think twice of switching to the "$15" DSL deal. I'll do the full battery of tests during the 30 days, and if there are no major complaints, will just keep it.

I just ordered the Pro package today. Finally had it with Insights over priced plus tier last night. Lag has been pretty bad as of late in the evenings. DSL cant be any worse (hopefully) and it'll be $55 a month cheaper.

Not necessarily... I've got 30 days to cancel with no temination fee if the service doesn't live up to my expectations.

Well it's been about a month.

Regarding a speed difference between SBC and InsightBB, I can detect an occasional small speed decrease with SBC. It's very small but undeniable.

It's very noticeable when downloading huge emails. I've changed my email program to (pre)download email once per hour. Problem (mostly) solved.

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied. No regrets.

Insight was great and faster. SBC is great and cheaper. You make the call.

what about latency with dsl? Does that all depend on how far away from the CO you are? I live in peoria il and we have only had cable for about a month...so far it is decent "speeds" (about 3000/350) but my latency is horrible. Pinging yahoo at around 50 for the first few packets...then shoots from 50 - 100 back to 50 then to 200...stuff like that. As a downloader first I like the speed, but for gaming that is nuts. I have had techs out and they were very smart for the most part...but I don't think the problem is local, sounds like routing to the RDC to me.

I was a InsightBB customer for 4 years, and have been with SBC for 2 years.

Make the jump, it is a no brainer. I would agree that you should ask for tier 3 support as soon as you call their tech support. But I never need to call them. Also, I would never call them anyway. You'll get great support if you visit the SBC forum here on DSLReports.

I'm running the 6016/608 plan and couldn't be happier.

By the way, I was always very happy with Insight. I made the switch to get the additional upload available via DSL (two years ago the best Insight offered was 128 {which didn't work well with my Voice over IP connection}).

I have debated between InsightBB and SBC DSL several times. In the end, I have had SBC DSL for 3 years - I keep signing up for their 3000/512 deal and as long as I sign up for a year, I keep getting the advertised price (it expires at the end of the contract but I have been able to renew at the low price).

I consistently get 2400/400+ and pings to Yahoo are usually 40 ms or so. I use this service for work (I monitor several real time processes from home) that are quite bandwidth intensive and have not had problems. Few outages.

I agree the standard SBC techs aren't much but the SBC folks here are great. Recommended.
