Anyone jump from InsightBB to SBC DSL?

Has anyone jumped from InsightBB to the $15/month SBC DSL Express package? It offers 384k-1.5M down and 128k-384k up. this is significantly slower than my present 3.0M down and 256k up. However, it's 45-15= $30 cheaper !

I confirmed I can upgrade to the DSL pro package with it's 1.5M-3.0M up and 384k -512k without a penalty. It's $25/month. Still $20 cheaper.

This looks like an option for me, but I'd like any feedback from someone who's jumped. It's a year commitment. I'd hate to end up unhappy. The net is TOO important to me.

I'm a heavy websurfer and even heavier newsgroup user.

TIA

ARE YOU NUTS?

why is sbc selling this so cheap????

I don't like insight but they are much better than sbc dsl I mean there copper is getting old in most places they shortend the max line from 18000 to 8000 that should tell you they are having problems delivering service

I'll take that as a comment against my proposal.

On our corporate internal newsgroups, there has been plenty of positive remarks from people who've signed up. However, NONE of these people have jumped from INSIGHTBB cable to DSL. Most have upgraded from dialup. Hence, they are biased.

Actually,I like InsightBB. But money is money?

Thanks for the advice!

I never jumped from Insight to SBC, but I have used both on a regular basis. I signed my parents up with SBC several months ago, and they are really happy with the service. Their connection has been rock solid and they get consistent speeds with low pings. I haven't used the newsgroups via SBC (nor do I use them with insight) so I can't speak to that.

I've been happy with Insight the last year and a half that I've had their service. I've a few outages over the time, but nothing too serious, however, my speeds have been all over the board with them.

I would probably jump over to SBC if I could(to save money), but unfortunately, where my house is built I'm too far from the CO and RT. Good news is, that it's a brand new community, so if/when their fiber services are offered, I'll probably be able to get their service quicker.

before i got crappy insight i had dsl for 4 years, never a down time, this is in rockford il, on the west end, speeds were ALWAYS constant

pros and cons for sbc
technical service sux until tier 3 and all u have to do is ask to speak with tier 3 and they will transfer u no questions asked
speeds wont be the same if your downloading unlike cable where you can download multiple items at your top speed(least thats how it works for me)
cheaper and better downtime=never in 4 years even when the power went out i was surfing the net witha generator

and your price is locked in with your "contract"

If insight is so bad, why dont you go back to DSL? As insight does not have a contract you are locked in.....

I hope that is why daily from about 11am to sometime in the afternoon why I keep dropping my connection, then it is rock solid in the evening and night. I have not bothred calling yet since I am suspecting system upgrades are to blame. Seems lik ein the evenings my connection is much better than it had been, hope that keeps up, makes up for the problems of late.

I made the jump from insightbb last year to SBC DSL. I started out with the pro package then learned that there was a faster package that was not advertised and that I could upgrade if I was within 10,000ft. of the CO. Sure enough I was and I upgraded to speeds of 6018/608. I never have any down times and everything has ran great since the switch! Im very happy with it:)

1.5M is fine for downloading. So what if a file takes twice as long to download if it is still done overnight? If you already have a phone line then DSL is the way to go if you can see yourself appreciating 30 bucks a month more or 360 bucks the first year. That rate is only for one year correct?

For me I have no phone line and split the line 3 ways so it isn't worth it

Verizon is here.... and I've long tossed them for just Insight. Using Packet8 with my Verizon number over Insight works pretty darn good. Besides, P8 was ~$22 with tax, and my local Verizon line was $30 for basic with all the taxes.

Can't wait to try out Insight's phone service!

Well, I jumped from INSIGHTBB to SBC-DSL. It's the $15/mon 1500/384 level. And yes, it's a one year teaser rate.

First impression: More than acceptable.

My new download speed is ~1200. Which is about 1/3 of INSIGHTBB (~3500). The upload speeds are comparable.

Even given that indisputable fact, if I had to make a judgement, SBC "feels" faster for normal surfing. It's certainly NOT noticeably slower.

As you might expect, downloading 30Meg files from NASA.gov is quite a bit slower. Oh well, I can live with that!

The SBC newsserver looks acceptable too... at first glance. INSIGHTBB's was very poor.

$30 less... and no significant reduction in usefulness. Can't beat it!

I'll post another response in about a month.

Later

I've been on Cable for over 7 years, and 1 year with Insightbb. I finally decided to drop insight when SBC offered the 3000/512 at $34.99/month (now $29.99). They give you a 1 month, no questions asked, period to drop the service if you don't like it. I ran both for a month, and found the DSL was faster browsing the web, but cable to have 512kbps faster on downloads. The big advantage to DSL was the upload. I've been running my server for years on Comcast and Insight with no problem, but I like it that SBC allows it. I don't have to worry about getting an abuse letter now. As for reliability, I can't complain about either. Insight only went down a few times, and I've only lost the DSL for 15 minutes over the last 6 months.
