broadband in gas

Sounds to me like someone has been sniffing the gas again.

I've seen some heavy duty plastic gas pipe buried in recent years - wonder how that will work.

Exactly.

Just how good of a waveguide is plastic. Not to mention all the valves and size changes.

Not exactly what I'd call a good waveguide.

I think someone is just looking for a new group of venture capitalists to fleece.

My neighborhood is currently upgrading all it's gas pipes right now. They have been ripping up all the gas pipes in the streets / to people's homes and replacing it with PVC pipe. They have been doing this for months, I am just glad they are doing my block BEFORE they pave it again next year because it really sucks when the town spends tons of money to pave a street and the utilities come and rip it all up the next month and you know damn well they aren't going to do a clean pave for the next 20 or 30 years. :-/
