Their ability to perform the inconcievably stupid is just as likely as any other company to do the same. Come to think about it, I can't think of one computer manufacturer period that hasn't pulled a "D'oh!" moment in retrospect.

The RIAA can't do squat about mp3 players because there is nothing illegal about them whatsoever so I don't think Apple is bowing to such demands. Rather they would be laughing at them. Certainly there is something going on to make the change. I just don't think the link is the record industry. As you said... that would be much too stupid a reason.
