A couple of questions for those of you who have test the new SmartBridges AirPoint Nexus gear.
If I replace an AirPoint Pro Outdoor with an AIRPOINT NEXUS, what should I expect in performance increase assuming all customers are 11b?
What other benefits will I get?
What will I loose, other than $$$$?

Good question. Here are some of the things from top of my mind. In summary, you gain the scalability and robustness in your wireless infrastructure.
Gain-
1) Per Subscriber Bandwidth Management for Downstream and Upstream flows
2) Higher Tx power (24 dBm vs. 17+ dBm)
3) Better receive sensitivity
4) Adjustable Noise threshold
5) Future investment protection as you migrate your subscribers from 11b to 11g or even to 11a (5 GHz) and ability to increase throughput by using COFDM
6) Browser based management interface
7) Full MIB2 compliance
8) Built-in Router capability to add hierarchy in your network architecture
9) Spanning Tree Protocol allows redundancy in the network
10) Time of day based service profiles (e.g. automatically lower the Bandwidth allocation at 8 pm on weekdays for business subscriber)
11) Better data security (WPA, 802.11i)
12) DHCP server, Client and Relay
13) Dual Ethernet ports with PoE output for easy daisy chaining
14) 10/100 Auto MDX ports
15) More robust hardware in metal chassis with built-in lightning protection, ability to tolerate large voltage fluctuations
16) Some more networking features to be released in the upcoming software upgrades.

IMHO, this a better deal than Brilan that we use now, as You dont have to have anything installed on the computer You are using. It does have a LOT of features that You won't find in the APPO. If You are like me?, You will sit there and scratch Your head for awhile wondering what the hell all this stuff does, but it is worth it in the end. The other really cool thing is that these units are all dual band, so the flexibility is fantastic, especially on a PtP link. SmartBridges and I go back a long way, and the prior road has been rocky to say the least. When I first realized that I was getting 15Mb on 2.4Ghz, I almost pooped myself?. Who knows what the future holds, but so far?, so good.

Tim you're just now seeing what those of us who use Mikrotik have been seeing for quite sometime.
To answer nwns question, yes you can possibly see a performance increase due to increased tx power.
As the others have said, what you're doing is stepping up in radios from last generation to the new generation so you will be gaining new features by the bucketful.
However I wouldn't go running out and replacing existing radios unless you have some need to do so. A very good rule of thumb in the WISP world is to not spend money unless it is really needed and justified. Now if you were going to do a new site, I would recommend starting with the Nexus, if Smartbridges is your chosen manufacturer. |
