New pricing for new customers only ?

I noticed that the 1500-3000/384-512kbps package is now listed at $24.95 - I called to see if I could get my plan 're-rated', on a new contract. It appears to be valid only for 'NEW' customers - how sad. SBC was able to re-rate my plan when I was with them. When my plan is up, I may have to see about switching back.

I'm with you on this, As a rule I don't support companies that work this way. As a current customer you should get the same terms as a new customer, as long as your willing to start a new contract. This is a terrible business practice that basically takes advantage of the very customers keeping the business going. I switched to cable from Dish for this very reason. As soon as my DSLX contract is up I'll probably dump them too. After all they don't appreciate my business, or they wouldn't be offering new customers faster service for less than I'm/we're paying. People really should make an effort not to support companies that have these types of policies. If enough people stand up, the nonsense might stop. Basically all the current customers are subsidizing the new customer's great rate. What a way for DSLX to thank you for choosing them over all it's competitors. Thank you DSLX!

You have to look at DSLextreme position also. They're in business to make money. If their contract with SBC say they can't re-rate because they're paying a fixed amount based on the rates when we joined, then they would lose money if they give us the new promo price. One compromise would be to keep current customers happy, who visit this board, by giving them the new rate, since 99.9% of their customers won't call in for a re-rate.

I disagree. Losing money on any customer is always a bad call.

I share your distaste with these "new customer" deals. But, d_l See Profile posted the underlying details from SBC. It's there in black and white, DSLX doesn't have much choice but to follow it. I would hate to stop supporting a good ISP like DSLExtreme just because the 800 lb gorilla that they depend on has a policy that discourages long-term business. I'm concerned enough as it is with the microscopic margin they have on that $14.95 deal. DSLX certainly should not be losing money on customers just to retain them. If they start doing that it won't be long before service degrades or the ILECs are our only choice.

I'm thinking of downgrading my line (1500/3000) and like to stay with DSLextreme but with the "new customers only" packages and SBC is doing the $14.95, it's tough.

I like to support dslextreme too but $50 fee to downgrade and not much more...

$24.95 plan for downgrade.

Ok.. I looked at DSLXxtreme new plan for upgrading existing customers and it has $24.95 for 384-1500 plan with dynamic IP and eventhough it has $50 fee, the next page says "Free".

Currently I have 2 static IPs and pay around $58/month, if I choose to downgrade to the dynamic route, will there be downtime? Would I be sent a new modem since I've been using my own modem since I signed up more than 2 years ago.

Still $10/month more than SBC
