Strange Speed Issue

Ok, just looking for suggestions here.

The layout is this:
Our AP location has the AP, a web server, and the backhaul internet link all connected together via a Netopia 3346N.

AP and clients are Senao CB3+ Deluxes

The client I am testing with is 2.5 miles away with decent LOS. One tree close to client, but Current Communication Quality is coming in at 53-60.

Test transfer from Webserver from internet to Webserver = 5Mb/s
Test transfer from the webserver to the client = 3.5Mb/s
Test transfer from the internet to the client = 1.5Mb/s

These numbers do not compute to me. Why would my Internet transfer to the client be less than the Webserver to the client?

What size is Your pipe to the internet?. If it is only a T1, that would explain it. The other reason is overhead. Running a speed test from the net to a client is not a tell all, as net congestion etc. could be an issue?

The pipe to the internet is 6Mb, that is why I included:
Test transfer from internet to Webserver = 5Mb/s (Typo aside)

I can run these tests consistently at very hours of the day. (Most recently at 2AM Central time) Always 5Mb to the webserver, always 1.5Mb to the client.

Looks like your bottle neck is somewhere in your NOC? cause you are getting 3 megs from client to webserver still kind of a large loss there but the majority of your loss is from the noc to the net?

What are you using in the NOC for bandwidth control switches etc? I know when I had a net config I.E 10 meg full instead of 100 MEG full duplex it affected service as well. We have a 6 meg pipe and NEVER have we seen a customer get the full 6 megs during testing the most we saw at any customer site was 4.5 megs to the net. Also how or what are you using to determing speed?

That was with Trango 5.8 gear wide open.. during busy and non busy times. Give us the layout of how your network is once it gets to the NOC?

The NOC is simply the Netgear unit. It is a DSL modem with a built in 4 port 10/100 switch. DSL comes in DSL port, and then the webserver and AP are connected to ports 1 and 2 of the switch respectively. Not using any bandwidth shaping yet as I am just testing this new location.

To test speeds we are using plain old FTP.

Next question is your AP on top of the NOC? if so can you measure bandwidth from a client unit pointed to the ap right there less then 50 ft? and if your AP is at a remote location can you test right at your AP? check at this one or two locations and see what you get?

So work your way back from the client etc..

Are all of your tests (Web Server to Internet, Client to Web Server, and Client to Internet) using FTP for the tests?

AP is on top of the NOC. Haven't tested close to AP yet...but the Client to Webserver test seemed to eliminate the Wireless links as the problem. I will give that test a run.

Web Server to Internet - Speedtest site (speedtest.wi.charter.com)

Client to Webserver - FTP

Client to Internet - Speedtest site (speedtest.wi.charter.com)

This has the potential to be the difference in the tests, I will use FTP for all and see what I get for speeds.

try testing with the mikrotik testing server, see if that changes anything. mikrotik.com

That's a nice little utility.

I can test between the web server and client with it, but I do not have a fast enough place on the internet to use this utility to test with.(Work only has 2mb connection) Is there a public server that I can use that tool to connect to and test the bandwidth from the internet?

maybe it's an MTU problem - just a wild stab it the dark really but this gave me a whole pile of grief with speed and things like www.ebay.co.uk not working.

If the MTU is too big then the data packets will be fragmented and have to be reassembled if too small then larger chunks of data end up being in lots of packtes...
